We all lust after these, but who has actually used them and experienced them?
What do they sound like to you?
Is it worth the extra cost to put them in?
Are they brighter, cleaner than others?

What do you think??

I haven't used them yet, but I've been gathering a supply of them off of eBay for my AC15 project, hopefully I'll be able to answer your question in a couple of months. I still have a few more to collect before I have the full set.

I have to admit there are a lot of not-audio-critical coupling applications in the AC15, and I'm using mustards there just for vanity, and so it'll look "right" when I take pictures.

I used them in my 'ac15' head.......i like them, but I like the sozo's and mallory 150s too....they all differ in complexity, but I'd be hard pressed to tell any difference in a mix or live.....

0.01uF @ 400V Mustards seem to be pretty scarce, I haven't seen any pop up on eBay in the two months I've been looking. Well, there were two of 'em in a mixed bag of used ones last month, but most of the other useful values are popping up NOS fairly frequently.

I've got a bunch of NOS 100-150v rated ones but haven;t found a use for them yet (not rated high enough for amps).

How lucky can someone get? What values are they?

0.001uF - 0.47uF and all points between it seems, I went through quickly and pulled out and measured the sIII replacements :

3 X .01
3 X .022
4 X .0047

but I have also about 6 each of 0.1 0.22 0.33 0.47 plus a bunch of other values .05 .068 etc.

Real nice guy, I was actually looking for some bumble bees for my LP. I also bought about 90 mixed used EL34 and 6L6 tubes for a really good price.

OK, I'm a convert. I re-capped my sIII combo with mustard caps so now I'm running Trinity iron, mustard caps, NOS tubes and Tone Tubby speakers. One thing I am saying is that this particular amp is not for sale :-) I played all yesterday evening at different volume levels and the clarity of the amp is stunning, it just gets better and better. The other thing I got a kick out of was taking a bunch of components that were sitting in a valve radio in the 50's then probably lying unused since the late 60's and putting them back to work. I know they are inanimate objects but I like the feeling that they are back doing what they were made for. 8)

I guess I'll have to start the quest for some personal mustard caps even though we use SOZOs in the kits and amps now...
.01, .022, .0047 repeat.. hmmm

I've used the standard Sozos and am VERY happy with the result... I've yet to use their "Mustard Vintage" ones yet....they're spendy, but I'm still very curious. :)

I stuck the 'vintage sozo's' into my 'ac15' head build.....and then stuck in NOS mustards......I'm sold on the mustard myth.....there is definately a particular character that sounds more organic and articulate...but if I didn't have the mustards, the Sozo's are the caps to use, for sure...they are the next best thing. Since the mustards are out of reach for most builder's pocketbooks, John has done a killer job of making an affordable alternative 8) , even the standard Sozo's sound really good to me .....Mallory 150's are a close 3rd in my book.

I'm only going to do 2 more builds (w/ mustards), then I'm done w/ amp building....time to start playing..... :D
