I wouldn't use wire rated for 300 volts. For safety (and to comply with the electrical code as far as I know) wire should be rated for the highest voltage in the chassis, even if it's only carrying 5 or 6 volts. 600-volt wire is the next step up, so that's what to get.

You could use 22 gauge. It can handle about 7 amps of current, more than enough for wiring up tubes and pots. 18 gauge is too thick and it's harder to work with. Solid wire is preferred over stranded because it stays where you put it and it's easy to attach to terminals.

Also, while it's a good idea to use the same wire colors as the layout drawing, it isn't mandatory if you just want to use the supplied wire. The different colors make it easier to trace the wires on the drawing, and it would make tracing them easier in the amp as well. But it's a fairly simple amp and there aren't a lot of wires running around the chassis when you have to trace something.

I figured the 300V was a deal breaker... I’d really like the colours to match just to satisfy the OCD in me... but if I can’t find something reasonably priced I’ll use what’s included, Digikey has the wire is like but the smallest quantity is 100ft. I’m bound to screw some things up but not that badly :)

More progress... not quite sure how I managed it but I got the board mounted inside the casing... I thought that was going to be harder than it turned out.

I decided to just put colour matching heat shrink around the wires rather than buy new wiring and I think that should do the trick. Quick question... how haven’t found anywhere in the digram for the attached what believe to be a capacitor... maybe I haven’t made it far enough in the documentation... but hoping it doesn’t go on the board anywhere.

On to wiring up the board to the tubes and inputs.

Think I answered my own question with that mystery component, looks like it goes between the tone and bright! It’s all in the documentation :)

Correct. Along with the yellow poly cap. I noticed you used carbon films in the spots where the build guide shows carbon comps (1M and 1K5), along the bottom edge to the right of the power resistors and next to the 25uf electrolytic cap(1K5). Two of the carbon film 1K5's are shown on pins 5 and 6 of V3 and V4 and input jacks have two carbon films (1M) for the Bright and Normal Hi inputs. Will work the way you have it, don't know how it will affect the tone. :hmmm:

That doesn’t sound good for me... when populating the board I was really focused on the colour bands of the resistors more than the type of resistor. I don’t have a whole lot of extra resistors... I’ll have to do an inventory of what I’ve got left... which I believe I need to use on the inputs and tubes so if I’ve messed it up I should have the parts sitting there.

You've got the right resistors, just in the wrong places. Just trade them out. I wasn't being critical. If you check the values of the remaining resistors in your third picture you'll see. The yellow-violet- yellow is the optional smoothing 470K resistor for V2, not required unless needed. The Tweed was my first Trinity kit and I made my share of boo-boos on it and a hard to figure out one on the second, a Tramp. But you learn as you go and you do it. Don't get frustrated

Oh I didn’t take that as critical at all... thank you for the input... I need all the help I can get!

This version of the Tweed, as designed, is meant to replicate the true sound of a '55-'60 model. The carbon composition resistors are used to replicate that tone. Resistance in a carbon comp will "drift" away from its stated value and gives the amp it's tonal characteristics ("mojo"). Carbon film and especially metal film, not so much (tighter tolerance in use). Hope this helps.

Okay... I got the surgery/swap done.... the two 1K5 I swapped out now go across the 5/6 on V4 and V3 while the 1M joins my other 1M on the HI Bright and Normal as indicated. I now see the 470 as well which I won’t add to start with.

I kind of murdered the 1M removing it... does the paint serve a purpose? Should i reuse the battle damaged one or should I go grab a new on at Sayal?

I'd check the resistance and see if it's good (and maybe buy one in case it goes bad down the road). If it's not, buy a new one. Hope you don't have order one, there's not any electronic store local to me and I have to order out of Arizona (Amplified Parts/Antique Electronic Supply) or Texas (Mouser). I'll quit whining, now. Good luck and good soldering

If you have to get one, make sure it's a 1 watt, 1M, per the Bill of Materials. A 1/2 W would probably do, but I like to go with what Coco specifies.

Looks like only a bit of the outer coating on the resistor has chipped off. If it still measures 1M then you could just put some epoxy or heat shrink tubing over the chipped end. But if your supplier in southern Ontario has them in stock and it's easy to go there for a new one, why not.

New ones acquired... Sayal is the best!

Next question... I did not purchase a cabinet from Trinity as I wanted to build my own, I did buy the cabinet hardware including the speaker and grill cloth... but what I didn’t get was any wire or connectors to connect the speaker to the amp... can I just cut the end off one of the attached pictures and use that inside the cab? Or does it need to be a stereo cable?

That would work. But the inner wire on these shielded cables tends to be thin.

I would just make a speaker cable using a 1/4" plug and some 18-gauge lamp cord.

And here's a link to cabinet plans https://modulusamplification.com/FREE_C ... NS-W6.aspx

Thanks for that cabinet link... Trinity had shared their plans with me but these ones help a lot. Sayal has 1/4 plugs... am I looking for the mono or stereo plug?

Mono. Antique Electronic Supply has a video tutorial in their Tech Articles on putting a cable together. Plug tip is positive, but it really doesn't make a difference.

Well... finally wrapped up the soldering last night... want to do one more tracing of everything so need to print another copy of diagram and go over things step by step. In the meantime I’m reading over the documentation over again before plugging everything in and starting some measurements. Cross my fingers everything goes well and I don’t electrocute myself!
