Well Folks, Here we go....We are now taking deposits on orders for this great sounding kit and if you want to be one of the first to have one, please let us know . A Deposit of $300 will secure your place in history!!
As is usual, the Trip Top is overdesigned for very long life and engineered for flexibility. The option to use KT88 is very appealing for live performance. I have heard this amp live and can assure you that the tone quality is there - better than the original based on studio side-by-side comparisons.
Read On and provide your feedback at your soonest convenience!

TRIP TOP AMP DETAILS
Based on several years of vintage Ampeg B15 designs, the Trip Top combines the original circuits of both the Ampeg B-15NC (1964) as well as the later B-15NF (1965-67). The B-15-NF channel has the volume control section before the tone stack and in the B-15-NC channel it is after. Maintaining these circuits keeps the same gain structure and biasing found in the original B-15N amp designs, helping to preserve their true heritage. It also has two power supply settings - Cathode and Fixed bias to provide further tone structure.

But calling it a bass amp is missing half the point. It's an AMAZING guitar amp. It has a different sonority than other Trinity offerings which have a focus on a very smooth but sparkly top end. The Trip Top is the opposite - there's still a nice smooth top end -and plenty of it - but this amp is all about low end girth and grind. It's got a nice big tight booty (even with the bass tone knob on full!) that inspires rocking out down low on the neck with open chords!! Fixed bias has a more forward, clear, present sound... Cathode bias gives it a saggier feel but adds this gorgeous rich high harmonic overtone to everything - really nice for those ringy single coil U2-esque type sounds.

The Trip Top is designed to output approximately 30 watts in cathode bias mode and 40 watts in fixed bias mode.

It has two channels each have Volume with a 'Pull Bright' switch, Treble and Bass controls. The first channel, NORMAL, from the B-15-NF, has the volume control section before the tone stack. The second channel, CASCADE, comes from the B-15-NC which has the volume control section after the tone controls.

The power amp section has two switch selectable bias modes - fixed (B-15NF) and cathode (B-15NC). Solid state rectifier diodes were used for the "NB" configuration, but not incorporated into our design (easy mod).

The Trip Top is designed to output 25-30 watts in cathode bias mode and 35-40 watts in fixed bias mode with 6L6.

The tube set used is 3 - 6SL7-GT dual triodes for preamp and phase inverter, 2 - 6L6GC power tubes and a 5AR4 tube rectifier.

The Overrated Output Transformer has multiple impedance secondary support.
The Overrated Power Transformer has more High Voltage ampacity (300 mA) than the originals and reissues in order to support 6L6 OR KT66 power tubes!

The Trip Top is built using point-to-point wiring using turret board construction for optimal service and reliability. Coupling capacitors and resistors are selected for maximum tone, performance and reliability.

KIT FEATURES
What differentiates our kits from others is part quality, fit, documentation and support. Included is all components; Selected SOZO caps; CARBON FILM and CARBON COMPOSITION resistors; SWITCHCRAFT or CLIFF jacks, ALPHA pots, JJ 50/50uf filter cap; Belton Micalex tube sockets, tube retainers & shields; 1/8" thick GP03 Turret Board with large size KEYSTONE Turrets; CARLING switches; high current impedance switches; All 22 gauge hook-up Wire; Pre-twisted 20 gauge heater wire; BELDEN Co-Ax cable; All Mounting hardware, spacers and nuts; 3 Inputs; AMPEG style control knobs; Pre-Cut 0.06" MIRROR FINISH STAINLESS STEEL Chassis with tapped holes for mounting screws; SILK SCREENED Front and Rear chassis labels; Detailed Assembly guide; large 11" X 17" size layout and schematic drawings and REAL Support.

HEYBOER OVERRATED TRANSFORMERS - Also included in the kit package is our custom made Transformer set by Heyboer. It is built to our OVERRATED specifications but based on original AMPEG transformers used in the early B15 amps. The Power transformer is rated at 300 mA compared to under 200mA originals and all other current third party suppliers including Ampeg’s re-issue. The output transformer has 3 Interleaves and heavier gauge winding than originals and multiple secondary windings (4, 8, 16 ohm support). This is an excellent B15 transformer. With our overrated and non-potted iron, you can optionally run KT88 POWER TUBES almost doubling the power output. The Trinity Amps power transformer and output transformer are all custom built and selected for maximum tone, performance and reliability.

To accommodate the DIY Customer, Cabinet and tubes are not included. To purchase tubes we recommend The Tube Store. Great people, great products.

We will fill in the resource section as information is created / permits.

As for running. KT88s, the key is that the iron can handle the load and output. So we increased the PT hi Voltage current to 300 mA from the stock of less than 200 mA. One of the weak points of the Ampeg design was the potted power transformer. Supposedly rated at 200 but was a common failure point. So we improved that.
Then, to handle the extra power output, we increased the winding guage even though the OT was rated at 50 W amd would probably manage it. This would add enough capacity for the KT88s.

As required, we will provide a proper cathode resistor to run KT88s in cathode bias mode and we will provide a fixed bias range resistor so the bias pot works within its range. There should be no other design mods to run the KT88 and we expect you will get close to 60 watts out in fixed bias mode if you bias it at 70%. If you run it hotter, and get even more out of it.

We have six reservations so far from Canada, USA and UK. That is pretty good for a start!

Hi Stephen;

I am starting to get itchy to build another amp....

Any idea on the actual time frame when the kits will be ready?

Thanks;
Andrew

Here's the update on status:

We're behind schedule because we decided to build a second prototype.

What's Done
Prototype built and tested.
Layout and schematic 99% final and posted.
Just got a 99% chassis CAD drawing yesterday.
Components ordered or in stock.
Blank prototype chassis on hand (this took 2 weeks longer than we had expected)
First custom transformer set received from Heyboer

What's to do
Hand Punch a prototype chassis based on CAD drawing.
Fit mechanical parts and order final chassis
Build a final prototype amp using layout and test.
Order transformers
Receive all parts and Put kits together and ship

Plan
Order chassis early next week.
Build prototype by end of the week
Order transformers by early following week.

Transformers and chassis will take 4-6 weeks.

If we can find a way to speed up decisions, we can reduce the timeline.

Sounds Great...
Middle of May the snow should be gone and I can drive up....

Have you had a chance to look at the Portoflex Cab?

Can't wait to see pictures of that too....

Take care,
Andrew
