And she sounds great!

Dual Rectifiers
Dual FX Loops
Half Power Switch
Speaker Phase Reversal Switch

12AX7 channel with treble/bass
EF86 channel with six position tone knob

Cut and defeatable master for both channels

Looks nice Scott.
How does the EF86 channel compare to the 12AX7 channel.
What rectifiers did you put in? Why two?
Can you jump channels?

I'm guessing it's pretty loud!

Thanks. EF86 is my favorite so far with both my Les Paul and my Strat.

I've got two NOS 5V4 rectifiers in there, but could run just one 5AR4. I like the tone better with the two 5V4's. I've not tried to jump the channels yet. I will be getting a stereo patch cable and try jumping the two FX Loops.

Loud as hell. I've got it running into a big bluesbreaker sized 2x12 with two Mojo G12H30's in it. For home/studio use, I'm guessing one speaker and the half power switch engaged.

FYI, I and a few others have been working with Nik at Ceri@tone on beta testing this design. It's been through a couple of versions, but I think it's quiet as hell for an EF86 amp. The EF86 is shock-mounted as well. I deviated from Nik's design on the star grounds. I elected to use two star points, ala the Trinity 15. Put the main component boards ground over as far from the PT as possible. also, moving the 68k resistors directly to the tube sockets. Even seperating the two 68k's on V1 that are tied together. i.e., keeping pins 2 and 7 soldered together, but attaching one resistor to pin 2 and one to pin7. It helped tame the noise some what.

I'm sure Nik will be posting the layout. He's got two versions of the chassis, one for his version of the transformers, one for the Westlabs/Matchless size ones.

running the two NOS 5V4's gives it a spongier feel that I like.

I've been itchin to build a tube amp for a while
i was all set on the 18 watt TMB but am not confident that i can use it as desired (normal channel for cleans (or pretty clean) and TMB for crunch and leads
i'm afraid the normal channel will break up too early

i've nevre played a matchless dc30 - but i loved the badcat hot cat i played (i know - they're totally diff) but Ceri@tone now has a matchless dc30 kit
could iuse the 12ax7 B/T channel for cleans and the ef86 channel for dirty

could someone describe the 2 channels (tone wise)

i really need 2 channels
amps i've loved
badcat hot cat
orange rocker 30
mesa dc-5
even the mesa lonestar special and the new ace seem interesting

however, none of these are really "buildable"

please advise - i'm pullin my hair out
i just don't want to build an amp i don't like or that doesn't suit my needs

Hey Scott - looks like a nice build!

Did you do the effects loops in series or in parallel?

You gonna' call it the Celtic "Claymore"? (after the two-fisted sword, not the mine)

Cheers,

Chip

the dc-30 doesn't have the kinda gain like the other amps you mentioned. The clean channel has the chimey voxy vibe but has similar headroom to a lightning. It doesn't have the headroom like a fender twin etc amp and kinda breaks up alittle early.
The ef86 channel has alot of gain, but gets buzzy and farty in the bottom end as you crank the dial. The key is adjusting the voltage going to the tube to be <300v, around 285v I found is good.
And DON"T use current production EF86, they are all rubbish. More gain and alot fuzzy in tone. Compared to NOS (clear punchy) they are night & day.
I've found this amp to be quirky (in a good way) - and in that some of the most glorious cleanish breakup to mid gain tones to be found.

What kind of music do you play? The TMB is kind of a "hard rock" amp, the DC30 will do blues, country, britpop, '70s rock...
