I had a little more luck with ampwares. At least I got the tolex, handle and some caps. I guess I shouldn`t be too picky even if I didn`t get my sockets and a couple other stuff from them, even though I paid for them.

There should be a list of suppliers not to use somewhere so nobody else gets shafted.

Stephen, you have grill cloth for sale, and do you get all your stuff from the states

Where are all the suppliers from Canada

I had gotten the backordered email a couple of weeks ago, but I got the caps this past Tuesday. :D

I finally received mine a couple of days ago. I hope they sound better than they look. Now if I could just get my board stock in from McMaster and my cab in from Trinity...

;)

OK, OK. My sciatica has subsided enough so I can get back to business. You cab is on the operating table!

The SoZo's are smooth. Great for the 18Watt but I found them too much for the Lightning. I took them out of the PI on the lightning to get my spank back. (no jokes please). But I left a pair of .022's coupling caps in there just to take the edge off.

I like Sozos in amps with EL84s or EL34s. Especially Marshall style amps. They seem to smooth them out pretty nicely. However, I think for a Fender style amp orange drops are still the best.

Having said that I do have more Sozos on order...

I placed an order two months ago for sozo's, and that is what is stopping my build. I am going to give up on them. should I just purchase some orange drops? What will happen if I just buy some plain ol caps from a local electronic shop? Do they make that much of a difference?

I would go with Mallory 150s. They are the closest you can get to Mustard caps short of SoZo. Mouser has them in stock.

Caps really do make a lot of difference. You want to spend a little here.

Does mouser have the pots for the 18watt? I think I remember someone saying pec pots are the best. I will search 18watt.com and find the part numbers.

Thanks S2, I will get the mallory 150's.

Mouser carries Alpha pots, which are carbon comp. They are a little noiser than conductive plastic like Clarostat. People do seem to agree that PECs are nice pots. I haven't tried them yet and can't comment. I use Alphas for everything and don't have any reason to complain. Keep in mind that most pots in most amps out there are the cheapest that can be found, so even Alphas are a huge step up in quality.

I use Alpha and they are pretty good. No problems.
Also use Mallory 150s all the time. I have heard generally good reviews on the SOZOs except the delivery aspect.

One of our members (Terry from Montana) used PEC, and I think he decided it wasn't worth it in the end. I think the have large hole size requirements as well, so you'd be drilling out.

Next time, you'll get a kit right? Is that Lightning on the horizon?

My favorite build is using Rat Shack resistors, a mix of Mallory, BBQ and Sozo caps and Alpha pots I had laying around. Not the highest quality parts all around. But I really love the sound of that amp, so I think the tubes, design and layout and transformers are way more important than specific parts to tone. The other parts might sway the amp %5 one way or the other, but as has been said, the other 95% is a lot more of a contribution.

This is very similar reaction Sgt Overdrive (over at 18Watt board) got once he let them 'burn in'. I haven't had a chance to go over there to listen to his amp yet, but I trust his ears and he's a 'Sozo' skeptic until now. He's got em mixed in w/ other assorted cap and says it's very 'British' sounding now. I have a handfull and if I like what I hear, I may put then in the Three Headed Beast aka: Drei Schicksale (I was originally going to name it 'Stuka' to counter Mark Sampson's silliness)
But yea....ummm...Sozo's......seems there's something to this

boo!.....

I placed an order and promply had it filled. It will be a while until I get this amp together and will be able to make some noise.

I'm making a HC-30 and although I'm using carbon film resistors I figured I'd go with Sozo's and silver mica in the pf range. JMI Vox's had mustards.

From what I read on another board is they tend to be dark sounding and are probably the wrong cap for a Fender Amp. I am new to Sozo so I have no experiance other than prompt delivery.

I can't stand it. I have to chime in here. I soooooooo think SoZos are overrated. I can't imagine putting them in a Matchless type amp. I have them in one of my amps on one channel only. The other channel is made with Mallorys.

In my last personal build (which was my Tsunami for those how are following), I ended up with 4 leaky caps. That is totally unacceptable to me. I have never had a leaky Mallory out of the hundreds and hundreds of them I have used.

I've done 4 or 5 18 Watts with them and found at least one leaky cap in each build. I'm almost done with them. My only problem is people request them and won't take "They Suck!" for an answer.

s2,

I'm sorry about your experiences. But really, of all the people I've talked to who have used them, you are the only ones who have had this much trouble. Maybe you got a bad batch. It makes me want to check out mine to see if any are leaking. I'm not hearing this kind of effect.

I started using them because the guys on the Metro amp forum were raving about them, so they went in my 6V6 build and I like them. For what it is worth, I also like Mallories; they're just different.

I think tone is subjective and I like the Sozos.
