Hi
I started to build a 18 watt TMB from scratch. And I mean, scratch.
I have been building RF amps from 144 MHz up to 10 GHz. However this was a long time a go.
I recently re-discovered my '74 Strat imitation which was demolised by a remote family member.... :x
Put on new strings, had it detonised (?) and it plays like hell again. I bought some 15 watt Peavey transistor amp from e-bay including a V-amp stompbox. Mm it sounded nice but I shure missed the tube sound and the glowing from the old days.
Traveling through internet I saw there was a whole live going on regarding these tube amps.
So I went to my attick, opent my boxes of Pandora and found some trannies next to a few 4cx250B's an QQE640. I even bougt a few trannies from e-bay.
At first I wanted to build the renagade with two El34, but than 50 watt would be a little bit to much for in house practis

So I started the 18 watt TMB. Chassis was made last Friday last night I bolted on the PT, wired the EZ81 and the first cap and yes we ve got 400 volts DC! a bit to much but I dont worry for now.
Unfortunately no pics yet available.
I will keep you posted.
Grtz

If you're looking for a cleaner sound, you might want to try the sIII some day.

at a 400v B+, your preamp isn't going to sound too pleasing. You're going to get some harsh grating distortion...It's my personal rule of thumb that el84 amps really need to be at 350 or less, depending on the circuit.

eddidepeddi, I spent some time in Zwolle a few years back...great country.
Along the lines of Bitsandvolts reply, I have a question. Is there anything wrong with creating a "voltage divider" on the output of the PT? With 4 properly selected higher wattage resistor, couldn't you tailor the PT output to any reduced value you need based on current draw? Perhaps there's an output impedance issue.

Hi

Well actually the only things I have to do is realigne the Bias of the El84.
and check by voltmeter if the ECC83 's are not above theire specs concernig current and grid settings. I might have to see for different triode anode serial R's.

The devider at the PT might work but this will introduce a "sac " that I dont want.

Come on tjis is fun. :)
I will check volts and bits anyway guys

Actualy I checked this link viewtopic.php?t=416&highlight=voltages (hope it works this way)

As you can see the B+ is 424 without the tubes.
I was reffering to my B+ without tubes , except the EZ81 ofcourse, when I said 400V. So this seems to be rather oke :)

That should come right into the ballpark once you have your tubes in. :-)

Hi Legin
Thanks, I took a peek at your websit to admire your 18TMB.
Looks nice and well built, but eh.. your OT looks pretty huge. I take it it can handle a lot more than the 18 watts?

Thanks, the OT on my sIII is a clone of a Hammond 125E just a little more robust, sounds pretty good so I bought the rest of the stock my supplier had so I have another two. Problem is there will be no more after those. :-(

Hi Nigel
Hm to bad. I bought two trannis fvia E-bay for 35 Euro's
The PT weights more than 7 kilo's and has a separat 50 volts for biasing purpos and 2X 350 volts.
The OT weights more than 6 kilos but is 3.2K so only EL34. I think this couple can run at least a 100 watts.
When I have my webspace ready on my pc, I will put some pics on.
Grtz
