I know the 2061x reissue is supposed to have more gain than a normal 18 watter, but I wonder how this head will compare to the Trinity sIII.

Anybody know?

Haven't heard one, but the solid state rectifier in it woud certainly take any sag or tube rectifier effects like compression, away.

I have heard that they didn't sound as good as the original 18W amps even thought they used 2 EL84 tubes in the power amp, 2 ECC83's in the pre amp. Might be bacsues of the solid state rectifier in the power supply. Accordingly, they were discontinued around 1974.

My guess is that the sIII, original 18W design or TMB would sound better.

The general consensus is the 20W sounds killer until you hear it next to an 18W. In fact, it does not have more gain if you mean overdrive when you say "gain." The 20W is louder and has more clean headroom. This is because of the SS rectifier. It produces higher voltages, which do create more gain in the preamp, but increase the headroom of the power tubes considerably. The net result is less grind than the 18W.
