Shameless plug time... The s2 Lightning PT sports a 3.25A rectifier tap, so a 5U4 is no problemo.

The 5U4 draws a lot of current for sure, but I do not know if the extra capacity and overbuild exists in the Matchless Lighning trannies, but I know S2's trannies are engineered to supply the extra current from a thread in another forum. Consider this if you are building an amp.

I have an 52 Gibson amp that uses a 5U4 and it has no stanby switch. I must strip the cathodes every time I turn it on, but the NOS rectfier I have in there seems to take the abuse pretty well.

An unmentioned bonus is that as NOS tubes the 5U4's are cheaper than GZ34's.

The West Labs stuff specs 3 amps of 5v on both their 15 watt and 30 watt PT's. I assume any other iron used by Matchless will have the same specs.

why no standby? westlabs sells that triple throw switch that I'm going to use for a standby.

Yeah, I like that thing. I'm sold on it just conceptually. For those who don't know, it's got two decks so the one switching power at the three throws is off-on-on, standby is off-off-on, so it's all on one switch. Why didn't anyone think of that before? Great upgrade idea on vintage, too.

I used 642-644H2 from Mouser in the tremolo Lightning I just finished. It has the progressive circuit and has worked great thus far.

From my experience with the taboo amp, the 5Y3 provides quite a good amount of start up delay....it's probably fine to use in an amp without a standby....

but I'll defer to s2 and coco for the final word on that....

I would think that a standby switch would be preferred in this case. I know s2 has used a 5Y3 on a 15, so lets see what he has to say.

I know this is an old thread but how did the test with the 5Y3 come out? I have an old GE 5U4GB in the drawer that came out of an old HiFi.
Prolly going to build my Lightin' this month as I have now sold all my prototypes.

I know s2 likes the 5Y3, I've never tried it, just the 5U4

I have a 55 Tremolux that I've been using a 5y3 in for years. I recently put a EH 5U4 in it. The 5Y3 has a lot more "Sag" at higher volume settings. With the amp dimed ( or more like "Twelved" ) :lol: and hot humbuckers, it will almost "squat" and completly brown out. The 5u4 tames that tendancy very well.
Hope that helps. Heck, for ten more bucks you can try both yourself.

David Allen also sells the progressive off-on-on 2 cirucuit switch for about $7. I've used them for several builds and like it a lot more than a separate stand-by switch.

He's in Kentucky. http://www.allenamps.com/ The switch is his part numer SW (Carling progressive $7). He also sells good transformers for fender type amps and a low priced single-ended OT that has gotten good reviews.

Bumping an old thread.

I'm interested in swapping the rectifier from GZ34 to a 5R4, similar to what a lot of AC30 owners seem to do.

As far as I can ascertain this will not harm the amp, has anyone tried this?
