I hear that all the time. Do you agree?

Is beautiful tone in the ear of the beholder?

Or are there certain tones that just ROCK?

One man's "Rockin'" is another man's (me probably) fizzy-nasty.

What I like--bright, clear with a bit of edge--may just sound thin to you.

Then there's the subject of "feel". I love Ronnie Earl and Anson Funderburgh's sound, but put a Strat in my hands and I'm looking for an exit, the thing just doesn't respond right.

The beauty part of the "Quest for Tone" is that it can be personal. You work to find what works for you, and in the process, learn how to work what may at first blush, be wrong.

Dave Funk said it best, listen to everybody, but don't listen to anybody.

P.

Tone is as subjective as taste I would think. I happen to like a lot of pepper.

If there was an objective guitar tone degree-zero, it would have been digitally modelled by now and this discussion board wouldn't exist.

Excuse me, I've got to reboot my guitar. (neck pickup+alt+delete).

There's a lot of great tones. And sometimes I'll hear a great tone, but know it isn't right for me.

If a tone is bad enough that everyone agrees it, it will soon become the next cool new tone (Industrial anyone?).
