I've had great success with inkjet waterslide decal paper.....Papilio is the one I like, but there are lots of others available. You can't print white, but otherwise it's great. Takes a bit of practice/technique to apply, but it works great for me. Spray with clear lacquer for durability.

I've printed a full sized panel on a laser printer and just taped over it with clear packing tape. Very basic.
