Well, it's taken a very long time to get here, what with the TRIWATT etc. So here is the start of the Tramp prototype build thread.

Phil & I settled on a 'final' design some time ago. Based on a design he had created but with all the requisite Trinity Tweaks.

In December, I created a layout and chassis design. I wanted it to be small enough to be able to fit into a cabinet with an 8" speaker if people wanted. I think the target will be 10" size, a bit smaller than a Tweed Deluxe cabinet perhaps.

The prototype will go into a spare cabinet I had in the shop with a 12" speaker cutout.

So here we go.

Tramp Eyelet Board

The first version of the board was too cramped, so I redesigned it after we decided to go with a 50/50 can cap. The empty eyelets on the left are for the VRM components that are part of the design.

Image

Naked Tramp Chassis Front

The final chassis is going to be 11" wide. It will end just past where the last two holes are. The prototype has to fit into a larger cutout so it's wider.

Tramp Chassis Top

Image

Tramp Chassis Rear

The Tramp only needs two tubes. 6V6 (Octal) and 12AX7. Anyone notice the extra 9 pin hole? [they say two holes are better than one!!]. the other large hole is for the 50/50 can cap. There is provision for a Tweed/'tude switch and headphone jack top and bottom of the output jack .

Next set of pictures will be with parts mounted on chassis.

Tramp Chassis Stuffed

The first version of the chassis went together really well. No hard to get at places. Went together quickly.

Yes, for the prototype, that's a Hammond PT & a nice-fat M.P.S. OT.

... and finally, the Guts

I'm not sure how "Fendery" this amp will be, but it would probably sit very nicely in a tweed Princeton or Vibrolux cabinet. The single 10" would be my choice 8)

Have a happy and prosperous New Year Trinity Amps!!!

Should be able to do the Fender thing pretty well (Tweed/'tude switch), and being only 11" wide, it will actually fit in a Champ cabinet with a larger cutout.

If the final version of the chassis is 11" and it could be converted to "top mounted" tubes & can cap, it would fit nicely into an Epi Valve Jr cab also.

Just saying... :)

As soon as they are ready - end of Feb maybe?

I think there is a Tramp pre-order thread going if you want to join that thread too.

Well, I just happened to have it apart tonight to install a new OT, so I can tell you exactly.

Chassis is 12" wide x 2 3/4" high x 6 7/8" deep. Note that the cabinet opening itself is 12 7/8" wide.

The front cutout is actually 11 1/4" x 2 9/16" (approx). I thought it was 11" but I was mistaken.

Jeez,`that piddly ass little amp has a chassis that deep and wide? What were they thinking?? There must be nothing inside it. Jeepers, the TRIWATT head is only 6.5" deep.

Anyway, I did think of it, but 11" wide is the max I want to go and 5" deep.

There is an awful lot of open space in there. I suspect they did it so they could use the same chassis for the combo & head & have plenty of clearance for the speaker in the combo.

Either that or they knew nutjobs like myself would be modding the <bleep> out of it & left us lots of room to work with! :)

I'll take a couple of pics of my modded version. I can tell you that the original PCB is only 7 3/4" x 2 1/2", and that includes everything including the tube sockets.

<NOTE>

With a VJr, personally I think I would prefer to use its own chassis and just install a Tramp board inside, plus drill a few extra holes in the front panel for the extra controls. I might also stick with the VJrs' stock PT, as it does a pretty good job, although it will sag somewhat with the bigger power tubes.

And for kicks, stock OT & replacement...that factory job really is a little thing...

Look out for a big improvement in tone with that mod. :D

I was indeed a big improvement! It's much fatter & thicker now. I think it's basically where I want it. I may beef up the first filter cap & tweak it to tighten the bottom a bit, but it sounds great as is and runs very quiet too.

If this thing was stock I would definitely look at dropping a Tramp board in there.

One may be able to salvage the cab and speaker from something like this and just drop in a complete Tramp chassis (with some advanced planning)...

It may be slightly less painful than heavily retrofitting a Jr.
Just thinking...

...and I'm sure that is one heck of a Celestion for that money
Still though, a cab with nice corners, feet and a handle, a speaker :P You might even get get $10-$15 bucks for the amp on Ebay. Change out the grill cloth, good to go!!!

I like the "shape" of this one as well, maybe the larger model though...

Yeah - there's a few little SS cheapo practice amps that might fit the bill for a conversion too.

Speaking of small combos, what's the word on the 8" TT? Has anyone tried them? You see, I have this 4x8 cabinet...

Nuff siad about the VJ ... maybe start up a Dressing Room thread on Donor Amps!!

I was able to finish off the power supply, VRM and power indicator indicator. what needs to be done is to wire up the tubes & controls. Zaphod has taken it to work on that, while I get back to business.

It was one of my goals to get the Tramp going in 2009, so if we can get it going by this weekend, I'll call it acheived.

Hopefully, we'll have some player feedback on it in the next 1-2 weeks.

Yes, an LED indicator and MOSFET VRM. You could almost call is Solid State! BTW, the LED is driven by the 6.3V heater line with only a 220R dropping resistor. Works fine. Doesn't need DC. [But you knew that anyway! ]
