Hey Stephen...I just sourced a bunch of parts to build a 5f1 with my grade 8 class (I have six signed up for this after school program I'm piloting this year). It sounds like the Tramp might be the way to go in the future. Can't wait to see it.

Damn dude! Why couldn't I have a grade 8 proejct like that!!! Maybe I'd have kept playing back then instead of being an idiot & quitting for 15 years.

I did do an electronics vocational program in school. No yummy tube stuff unfortunately, but our instructor was a big time audiophile. I remember we built a lighting engine driven by an old integrated amp as a side project. My buddies used it for driving the lights at school dances & whatnot for several years.

That would be very cool Duke! I hope it would be perfect for that sort of thing.

My wife runs the community education department in our town and I would love to offer a soldering/amp building class. I'm thinking it may be too cost prohibitive though when all is said and done with the soldering equipment and amp kits, etc. It might be worth some marketing though to see if there is an interest. I know a few of my guitar students would do it! :o

Looking forward to the prototype Stephen. I would definitely consider the Tramp over a Champ if I were to get into the amp building classes 8)

Well, some progress has been made .

A 'final' schematic' [rev.4] was created and a board layout 90% done and chassis layout 50% done.

Some progress anyways - thanks LJ.

Hey, tramp or bass rig, I'll take one of each :)

Maybe I can test run the tramp at the end of the month? :)

We might have to have a bit of a disscussion about that. Personal guitars and bass = 44 (subject to rapid change) building 12, for sale around 150(paid for)
Just finished a LP copy that as always I don't want to sell. The wilkenson humbuckers I put on are amazing.
Jac, from reading your posts and seeing your humour. I have a sneaking suspicion if we ever hooked up we would drive everyone around us up around the bend. I think it would be a blast. :P :D 8)

Should add, I run a music store out of my basement.

Excellent...a new area to explore!

Sounds very interesting. Timing will be spot on...I should have my multi-arcade project done by the end of the month & I'll be looking for another adventure.

Besides...6 amps isn't enough, right? RIGHT?!?

So, when you say "octal tubes with OT & bias changes", could that be something along the lines of the THD concept? Basically any Octal tube (within reason) with a beefy OT? I've always been curious about how they make that work considering different tubes like different OT impedances.

One thing I've noticed about the plethora of low-cost single-ended amps on the market, the EL84 units at least, is that the tone of all of them has a fizzy & somewaht "nasal" character - kind of an AM radio thing (but not that extreme). My VJr is still like that even after major modifications through several designs. I haven't changed the OT though, and that may be the key. I realize the fizziness is just part of the EL84 character when you push them hard, but the nasal thing isn't apparrent in the EL84 push-pull amps I've built/played.

With that said, I haven't tried any of the boutique (pricey) single-ended units.

Ok...I might have to get one of these...Emo, I'll even build it myself :D

As well, I still need Stephen to build me a head cab for my v6  My v6 had a cab...but I stole it for my TC-15 8)

So about a year later I can expect a call because you don't have time to finish it? :)

Yeah...I guess I can't refute history, can I :D

I guess maybe I should stick to buying the completed heads...that I have down to a science (much to my wife's chagrin  )

As far as buzzy EL-84s -

I've always needed a conjunctive filter to tame them no matter what the B+. Octals on the other hand sound fairly smooth all the way up to my ears. So maybe a switchable filter on the 9 pin power socket? Its tough to find the right filter cap/resistor ratio though - every EL84 needs its own custom settings to keep the chime but dump the buzz.

That's one of the reasons we're using octal power tubes with the Tramp, mainly 6V6s.
