I know that the Hiwatt DR503/504 had EL34. The beauty of the Triwatt is the lower wattage of the 6V6 or KT66 power section. Out of curiosity which tube, 6V6 or KT66, sounds more like the EL34 original power section? Not volume, but tone?

I've never played through a DR503/504 with EL34s, but I tried the 6V6 (NOS RCA) as well as KT66 (reissue Gold Lion) in the Triwatt and I much preferred the KT66's. Rounder tone, glassy top end. Did not break up nearly as quickly as the 6V6.

Thank you.

I would also suggest that it depends... Specifically, it depends on volume and use-case. If you're mostly playing at "apartment" volume (or "family friendly" volume in my case), then I think the differences are really hard to hear, if they're even there at all. I think at these conversation-level volumes, any differences between tube types can be made up for with minimal EQ tweaking. At least that's been my experience. I ran 6V6 exclusively, until recently, I installed KT66. At gig/band volume, there is a difference. But most of my playing is home practice, so there's no benefit to KT66 in this role.

Given the cost of KT66 tubes, I'll probably revert back to 6V6, and only install the bigger glass for gigs.
