When I engage the overdrive it has quite a bit of noise past 3 o'clock or so, not surprising for overdrive, but I thought I'd see if it's normal for this amp.

Couple more quirks.

I find it difficult to switch to the overdrive, to get the crunch I want the overdrive has to be quite a ways up, but at that level when I engage it there's a huge volume boost -- what settings Normal, Bright, Master and Overdrive allow for an overdrive sound that's switchable without the massive volume boost?

If Bright volume is too low and overdrive engaged I get squealing, anyone else?

Wire dressing is most likely cause of squealing. Use a straight wire as shown in the layout from term strip to pull pot.
