So, i finished my TC 15, and got started on the Triwatt.

Here the first days efforts.

Also ordered tubes, and have Tungsol 12 ax 7, Gold lions KT 66 and JJ 6V6 to look forward to.

Looks good. Triple check the jumpers underneath.

Finally made some progress.

This built is definately more demanding than the TC 15.
But i should be able to make it.
An A500K volume pot was missing, but luckily i had one lying around
ALso i used the blue 1/2 watt 1 k resistirs on the board, is that ok?

And oh, i am having fun.
And i can't wait to hear it in action.

Please report if you find errors.

Enjoy

Looks OK from what I can see. I'd shorten the leads to the impedance switch or at least braid them.

Ok, i am pretty much finished.

But something is wrong.
I am to tired to start searhing for errors, and will continue tomorrow.
In the meantime, it would be nice with another set of eyes.

I think i have done something wrong in the powr section, cause there doesnt seem to get power to the tubes.

I worked pretty slow, and tried to make it a bit nicer than the TC 15, but it's really hard to be neat when there are so many connections:-)

Anyway, please take a look.

Stephen, i did get a 240 V PT, right, or does it accept both voltages.

Thanks for looking. I'm off to fool around with the TC 15:-)

Here are the pics. Sorry, bad lighting, i will take some more tomorrow in daylight.

Does the pilot light come on and the power tubes' heaters light up?

The Pilot light come on, when it's on, not in standby.
No Tube heater doesn't seem to light up.

The power switch is wired up in reverse. The layout has mains switching on the left, standby on the right. That's why the pilot light is not right.

Hi there folks.

Fresh new day, so i looked the amp over, checked resistors, tried to change the power connections.
Found a few errors, some grounding was missing.

Still a no go, the tubes don't get power. And i don't know why.
Any suggestions is appreciated.
I took some new pictures, and man it looks messy when you get up close......
Anyway, would love to get it going, but i have no idea whats wrong.
Everything looks ok now.
But hopefully a pair of expert eyes can spot the error.

Btw, is the tubes type switch in the right position for 6V6'es?

Thanks

Pull the tubes and do step 10 Power Up. Did you do the Power Transformer test from Step 4?

I'd like to know what the raw AC voltages coming out of the transformer are. Yes, you have a 230 V version of the PT.

FWIW.....In the 7th pic down (showing a couple of pots, a resistor & cap), it looks like the cap/resistor leads may be shorted.

Hehehe i know, it says so on the PT:-)

Well, i get unsure on how measure sometimes.
I am not a native english speaker, and sometimes i misunderstand terms.
How do i measure the raw ac voltages.

When i measure the black lead coming from the PT on the power switch, with the amp turned on, and high voltage not connected to th board, i get around 56 VAC

When i measure the high voltage from the PT, the red leads, not connected to the board, i get 358 VAC on both.

The B+ AC measures around 3.6 V on the pilot light, and on the tubes(no tubes connected)

Hope this tells you something.

Stephen, thanks for the cap and the resistors, got them today.

I like the cable you use in the kits. I bought some from somewhere else, but its a bit thinner, does it make any difference?

Thanks

Nicolai

VERY CAREFULLY!!

Turn the amp off.

Set the meter to AC. If the leads are soldered in place, touch your probe to the terminals and measure where they are connected, between the two correct leads. e.g. Red - Red, Green-Green. If the leads are not soldered in place, use a clip or short jumper with clips at each end to attach your meter probe to the lead and be sure it's not touching anything.

Turn the amp on.

This is good.

You should be able to measure about 6.3 VAC across the pilot light terminals.

Turn the amp off.

To begin with, i powered up, with out the red leads soldered to the board, and measured.

Red to red shows 712 volts
Green - Green shows 6.70 volts

Then i changed the 1k resistors you send me, soldered everything in place.
Powered up, with no tubes.

Put it on standby, after a short time the Power transformer started smoking.....
And ii sounded like it was boiling, so i think it's had a meltdown, since it also got VERY hot......
I didn't change anything around. And the fuse did't blow.
The only thing i did was resolder the red wires from the PT to the board, i desoldered first to make sure i got a good connection.

Man this is turning into a tough build......

I took these pics right after the incident.

So,

Red to red shows 712 volts
Green - Green shows 6.70 volts

This was all good. So the PT is/was working as expected. :D

You need to dod this test again to make sure it still is.

The Power supply side needs a very careful review against the layout & test.

Hope that tranny didn't bite it. :(

I would go over everything with a checklist. Check every single joint. I saw a few bad connections from your pics; maybe not cold, but really poor dress. Get some copper braid and clean up some of those connections as you go. Check every single point against the layout. Take your time to get the joints looking good.

Just a few things I saw off the top of my head; you need to go over every connection still. In the 5th picture down of post 5 on turret board those two resistors don't look like they've been soldered at all. Plus there is one on the right with no solder.

in the fifth picture down of your next post there is a blue resistor on the 4th turret from the left that looks like there is only flux on no solder. I would reflow the joint on the next turret over to the left. It also looks bad.

On the next picture (pic 6) with the speaker outs the bottom left most connection looks cold.

Pic 8 the resistor next to the blue cap the lower lug looks like it needs a reflow.

I spotted a few more iffy ones but it's too hard to point them all out. The moral of the story is to have patience and make sure all connections are good before you fire this up and potentially break something. I would recommend looking at every joint and connection on this thing for potential reflow and then check every joint and connection against the layout at least twice. Patience goes a long way. Taking your time to make good connections everywhere will increase reliability, reduce headaches, and make a better sounding amp.

Good luck! I hope you get to rock soon!
