I see my kit has arrived in Canada Post East Coast Limbo - a.k.a Dieppe, NB. If they're true to form, the next tracking update - "out for delivery" - will occur the day after I pick up the package at the post office! That will likely be next Thursday (Wednesday if I'm REALLY lucky).

I did replenish my supply of solder lunch time, so I'll be ready for it!

Well, I hear the first kit amp is a "race" between me and you.. :)

I just layed out my kit on the dining room table, and hope to start assembling some parts and checking out the layout tonight, but it wont be untill Saturday when I can really start on it.

You might git er' done well ahead of me yet - I have a guitar I want to finish up as well so I dont know whats going on for the next week.

Isnt this fun??? :)

Not much of a race when you have probably a week's head start! I do have a history of short time frames for builds though...but still long hours :)

The first thing I have to do is put the finishing touches on Fortis's TC-15. Stephen's included a replacement lamp for it in my Triwatt kit, and I have to replace my makeshift heater secondary wiring with the terminal strip he sent me earlier.

Kit has arrived at the post office! Won't be able to get at it until Wednesday evening, but at least it's here!

On a roll - my "purpleback" Fane clones are on a truck coming to my house as I type. Well timed it seems!

And Stephen and I have worked out the details for a 2x12 too. Should be killer!

Funny - literally seconds after I originally hit "Submit" the FedEx truck rolled into the driveway. Here's what he left me...

And the hits keep on coming! I just picked up my head shell & Triwatt kit at the post office. Already have some of the hardware installed. Build thread to come - don't worry!

BTW, the head shell is a really nice piece. This is gonna be a stunning little mini-half-stack when we get that 2x12 together!

(snicker) That little edit cracks me up every time. :D

I was looking at a number of speaker options. From the clips I had heard vintage Fane's & Greenbacks topped my list. I did some research & discovered these are VERY close to the 70's Fanes tone-wise (so close one mag review I read replaced a vintage purpleback in a Hiwatt cab with one & couldn't tell any significant difference) so I decided to give them a try. I did look into vintage Hiwatt cabs & speakers too, but if you can find them you need a mortgage to actually get them.

I looked seriously at ordering a cab from Reeves with the purpleback clones Eminence makes for them. I thought $800 US + shipping & taxes was just a tad steep for a 2x12 so I decided to pass - especially with the current conversion factor.

Stephen and I have been working out a custom 2x12 to match my Triwatt. I think it'll be a cool little rig when it's all together.

Loudspeakers Plus might have a few Fane AX12-150s that they are closing out. I heard that model was the closest to some of their 1970s models due to the 2" voice coil. I picked one up, and will try it first in the the Combo Cab that will house my Triwatt.

What's the price on the BBQ's? And maybe a review.
Rob, would like to hear your review on those speakers also .
Thanks in advance.
Cheers

You're in the US, right? I think they're $100 + taxes/shipping each straight from BBQ. They'll do the bbreak-in service for no extra cost.

I don't wanna think about what the final cost was by the time they got to my door with the current exchange rate. Let's just say it was less than a single TTA, but not by much...and it was 2 of them...

I'll post a review as soon as I get a chance to drop them in a cab. I haven't decided if I'll wait for Stephen to finish my Triwatt 2x12 before I christen them. Depends on how busy I get over the weekend!

Hmm,
I looked around at speakers and suggestions. Funny that the Triwatt is going the way of Jensens, if Fanes aren't available.
I got a Great old 1x15 Fender (Bassman?) cab. Early 70's; Eminence. Very clean and hold on to your eardrums        8) 8) 8)
This might be a good candidate for the cab, eh 8) 8) 8) 8)

I also have the following speakers I will test in the Triwatt when it is finished:

1) Hellatone 60 (Celestion Vintage 30)

2) Celestion G12T-75 (Was not impressed with these in my Marshall JCM900 4502, but they sound OK in a closed cabinet)

3) _Weber_ 50 Watt Ceramic Silver Bell

4) _Weber_ 50 Watt Ceramic Blue Dog

I hope the Fane AX12-150 sounds the best. Spec wise it is the most efficent. With 6V6 tubes that little extra might help.

I have never tried the Eminence Tonker, but they are supposed to be a Fane Copy, also.

I've got the Tonker loaded in my Port City 1X12 OS cab

Tell me how that sounds - If a was to go with a 1 X 12" extension cab for the 1 X 12" combo, I would like the see if a ported cab would be the way to go, and the Tonker would be a logical choice for the cab because it should be similar in sensitivity and sound to the Fane AX12-150

My Fane is 8 Ohm and the rest of my speakers are 16 ohm, so if I went with a 1 X 12" I would need a new speaker.
