Power Transformer

Image

Power is same size as the OT. HV 315-0-315 to 180mA for a little extra beef. 6.3 CT is at 3A

Partridge Design 8K Transformer

Image

OT Specs:

The OT is really close to a Partridge on file that was torn down by Heyboer. It's built how the Partridge was set with the same interleave and hook up. It's a very involved winding with 4 primary sections and 3 secondary sections.
29 guage M-6 laminations that are the same size lams as original.
4-8-16 0hm outputs

Both transformers are the same size. In stand up, it will be tall way up 3 3/4" H X 3 1/8" W and 1 1/2" Plus the brackets, which are about 1/2" out on each side.
Same flying lead colours as our 18 watt OT.
Same flying lead colours as our 18 watt PT.

We also received a simpler version of the OT so we will build another TRIWATT and then compare the two for tone and decide which is best.

Will the Output Transformer allow for 4/8/16 Ohm speaker selection?

Thanks:

TRIWATT is up and working with new iron installed in the same locations for production versions. The 4 pre-amp tubes will be moved 2 more inches to the far end, for better pre/power amp separation.

Wow, those are some big chunks of iron :D

Careful moving the pre's too far into that corner, those of us with big paws and right handed have a problem working in that corner :P :P

Waiting for the test reports :D :D :D :D

I second that! But on the 2 V6's I've built I've mounted one the tag strips for the inputs on the side of the chassis instead of in the corner. Makes it a little easier, but still tight quarters.

And you're right - that's some pretty hefty looking iron - especially the OT! I can't say I have a problem with that!

Yes they are a good size and weigh in at about 5.25 lb each, 10.5 lb per set! The 18 watt/15 watt are 7 lb per set.

We'll be careful with the layout. At this point I sure dont want to change too much.

This is the first prototype amp, and the wiring below deck is therefore a little rough, especially after various mods, changes, tweaks, experiments with different grounds, transformers, etc. Stephen has also made some changes to the board, based on what we learned from this prototype. Components are now placed in a more Hiwatt-like rectilinear fashion, and we've optimized their placement for tidier wiring, minimal wire lengths, etc. We're also now using turrets instead of eyelets, there are now two cap cans, and we've altered the position of the power tubes to improve their spacing, relative to the transformers. So there is a gut shot earlier in this thread, but you'll need to bear in mind that the finished product will look somewhat different. :)

Edit: It looks like Stephen just re-posted that gut shot.

The most immediate difference we found was improved range on the Presence control. I'll be testing the amp some more this week, but we'll really need to get some of the guys with golden ears involved for listening tests. :)

Inside View - Looks something like this old pic!

Not military style but considering it works, is a protoype, required some wiring changes etc. - not bad.

Neds an update pic with the new iron. We'll save that for #2 perhaps.

Looks great for a proto guys. Congratulations and thanks to all involved for sharing this whole process :)

What impact do you think a tube rectifier would have on the sound and feel of this amp? I'm sort of a "sag" fan.

IMO it would lose a big part of the Hiwatt vibe. I know where you're coming from though, as I'm a total Marshall 18W fan. But these amps are very different - solid state power supply with 100uF filter caps, fixed bias, hi-fi spec transformers, etc. They have their own kind of tough charm. :)

I'm with Phil, I think it would compromise the amp. Hiwatt's are all about urgency - the sag would kill that. It ain't a Marshall, but fear not, it's plenty "tooby"... to me it's like a Marshall that's gone to the gym - a bit more testosterone and piss and vinegar... ;)

My advice to anyone with a conceptual hang-up on this thing is... listen first... then decide whether it's a problem for you or not... :) More clips soon... :D

Well,I've been playing the amp with the new transformers installed. It sounds GREAT with these big hefty transformers. I've been testing it with my vintage G12H-30 cab, and the tone is very clear and full, with all the chimey cleans and saturated overdrive you could ever want. There is a clarity and evenness in the highs now that I really like. Totally Hiwatt. :D

PS: I also posted this in the other (long) Triwatt thread, just for completeness

Even though this version uses the less complex Partridge OT, it sounds so good that we want to take it into the bgroup music studio to do some extensive recording with it.

I don't really think Brent will have a problem with that. The problem may be wrestling it out of his clutches afterwards! :D

LOL! Too funny guys... I'll definitely oblige with the "cold dead hands" comment once I have #2 in my clutches! #1 was never mine to start with so it wouldn't really be fair to expect that it should be mine... although I could definitely hold it ransom until #2 is completed!!!

Lots of clips to come... we're working on the day for the handoff and I've already got Rob brushing up on his classic rock repertoire... :)
