I had the chance to play through a Fender '57 Deluxe Reissue at Union Grove Music today in Santa Cruz. The '57 uses the 5E3 circuit. I was also able to play a Two-Rock for the first time (the Opal)!

I've always thought the tweed Fenders were bright and the blackfaces were warm. I'm not sure why I thought that---I've never played a tweed, and the '65 Deluxe reissue I had was BRIGHT. But man oh man was the amp warm! Obviously I didn't mention it to the salesman, but the entire time I kept thinking, "Make one. Make one."

It will be a great compliment to my Lightning and keep the whole small, low wattage thing going for me so I can turn it up a bit at church.

Can't wait!

According to Bradovka, his build came darn close to an original. 90% in a face-to-face with the the stock tubes. Not even NOS ones. So I'm thinking you could get pretty close to the one you played.. :D

How much is your kit going to be? Do you know when it'll be released?

I'll speak to the truth of that. The '57 Tweed Deluxe Re-Issue comes with a 12AX7 in V1. It sucks rocks IMHO. The 12AY7 is much more appropriate in getting the sound as originally designed. I did pop a GT12AX7C in the 5E3 when A/B-ing with the original Tweed, and the tone just gets farther away from "the truth" for lack of a better phrase.

12AY7 is the recommended way to go in those amps. That's what the circuit was designed for and the amp is very versatile when configured that way.

BTW JamesO, how did you like the opal? I have had one for a few years.
