Hi All,

About to embark on my first Amp build. Kit arrived the day. A speedy delivery (thank you Stephen for all you help with making the decision.) I have started and have all the hardware installed and have laid out the heater wire. But when I reached the end I was about an inch shot of wire. No problem, I thought. But no one seems to sell 20 awg wire. I can find 18 and 22 but not 20. My question:

can I use the left over wire from the PT to finish off what I need? I just need about 5 - 6 inches to go from 6v6 to the next 6v6.

Thanks all

I'm surprised you don't have enough heater wire. Stephen usually provides more than enough wire with the kits. Check your heater runs and make sure they aren't too long.

You could use the PT wire if you have enough left over. The key thing is to twist it together tightly. Stranded wire like the PT uses won't twist together as well as solid core does. I would use some of the solid core wire instead if you only need a few inches. Check your lengths to make sure you have enough to go from the board to the tube sockets and controls, then see how much you have leftover.

Even though heaters only use 6.3 volts, for safety all wire in the amp should have insulation that's good to the highest voltage in the amp. You could use 22 gauge wire for the heaters. I do that with my scratch built amps. It has more than enough current carrying capacity. 18 gauge is too thick and hard to work with.

Good luck with your build!

No, user error while cutting the wire. If its ok to use the left over wire from the PT, I'll finish it that way. I've attached a few pics of where I am curently at. just finished wiring up the PT

Thanks!

Looks good. Too bad about running short of the black and orange wire for the heaters.

Hi,

Moving along on the build. I finished wiring up the OT and PT. and am finishing up the board. I've included a picture below.

I have a quick question about VRM install. I want to ensure there is no polarity on the DC blocking caps before I solder into place.

Also, want to confirm that I am moving the 1m jack resisters to the tube grid on pin 2 & 7.

I am also doing the vol/tone mod which is evident by the .022 caps and the absense of C7.

Thanks

Looks good

Yes, 1M grid leak right on the tube socket.

Sorry about the heater wire. You can twist any of the other wires together to form them just use two colors

No problem, Stephen. I used the red and black lef over pieces from the PT.

I am a little confused putting the pot onto the PCB for the VRM. Which of the two attached pics is correct?

I also got the circuit board finished and installed into the chassis.

Thanks for any assistance.

Unfinished side up, as in the second picture.

Thanks Stephen,

I have another question. I have just finished installing the VRM. I wired up the Pot but I'm not sure if I have the wires correct on the back.

The yellow wire is going to the fuse. Do I have this right or should I switch positions with the black/red and black/white on the bottom of the pot.

Thanks

rob

It doesn't matter. It's a switch and it has no polarity. What you have done will work.

Thanks again for your help Stephen,

I finished the amp yesterday and did my testing today. My slow pace and triple-checking of everything I did paid off as the amp is working without any issues as far as I can tell. Voltages appeared within range, and no major hum or crackle.

I am plugging it into the speaker of my Blues deluxe and it sounds awesome. VRM appears to working as expected. The only hot place on the amp is on the side with the PT and rectifier. At first I thought it was the VRM mosfet because it is installed on that side but the mosfet doesnt feel hot on the inside so it be coming from PT and rectifier.

It has a hum but every amp I own hums like this in my 100 year old house.

I swapped the power tubes with some tung-sols I have and I think it sounds better with these than the JJs.

All in all, a very enjoyable experience building the amp. Excellent components and outstanding documentation.

I very pleased with the result. Just need to start thinking about the cabinet and speaker.

I am probably going to just but one prebuilt from trinity.

Stephen, do you have any plans for the cabinet available.

thanks again

Congrats on the build!

The only catch is that we demand some pics of the finished product!

Will do. I ordered the cabinet along with a tone tubby speaker from Stephen last week. So, in about a month I upload pics of the completed amp. Can't wait for cabinet and speaker. It already sounds great going thru the speaker in my Blues deluxe. Looking forward to hearing it with the tone tubby.
