So I have had my deluxe for 4 months and I really like it. I have a question about using 5881s and a solid state rectifier. Is this something I can easily do? The why is mostly just experimentation. I want to hear it.

thanks,
Steve

That might be a bit risky. The power will be over the capacity of the OT, so keep volume low if you do it. SS rectifier will put out more voltage and no sag so be prepared for that.

thank you, your warning is enough to convince me not to try it. I did understand about the SS rectifier adding voltage and was counting on it for the larger tubes.

Just as a follow up question which OT could I use for both the 6V6 and the 5881s with tube rectifier? There might be other components that would have to be changed? Filter CAPS?

thanks again very helpful
Steve

You need a output transformer that can handle about 25 W minimum.
Use a Sovtek 5Y3 and you should get about 400 V on the B+ .
You shouldn't need to change any other components as long as your voltages stay less than 450.

Stephen,
I was re-reading the tweed docs again and came across a section that seems to indicate if I change the cathode bias resistor from a 5w to 10w I could run 6L6s in the trinity tweed. Did I read that correctly?

thanks,
Steve

People ask, but it's not something we really recommend with the output transformer rated at a nominal 15 watts. There's not much point in doing this anyway. What we you trying to achieve?

Great question. What I may be trying to achieve may be done best by building a new amp.
I have done the following mods after having the amp since last June:
PI 470K grid stopper resistor mod
.022 uf coupling caps on both channels at V1
NO PI 25uf bypass cap.

I really like the results. Now if I could just get more overall volume out of it. It just can't keep up with the rest of the band. Admittedly we are playing loud. I am probably barking up the wrong tree. thanks

Well, a 6L6 in cathode bias is not likely to help you much. The. Tweed is a pretty loud amp so you guys must really have it cranked!
You can try a more efficient speaker perhaps. Every 3 db increase in speaker efficiency is equal to doubling your power.

As always thanks for your advice. I am still really liking the tweed. It is a great amp. Your hard work is appreciated.
