Hello Trinity Forum People:

Still testing my Tweed out, finding tone and looking for sweet spots. I was running the stock tubes but decided to try a NOS 5751 in the V2 position. Has any one tried this I would like to hear what you think?

I also have a NOS rectifier and some NOS 60's RCA to try once i get uses to the stock sound?

Peace and harmonics,

Sounds like a good idea.

Using a 5751 in the PI of an amp that normally uses a 12AX7 is a common mod to get a bit more clean headroom (not a bad thing to some people for the Tweed).

NOS rectos are a must in my opinion for the Tweed

Thanks KL:

I have an old Hitachi 5y3-GT made in japan; I believe is 60s vintage.

Why are these old rectifiers better or more desirable than new ones? Are voltages different and perhaps saggier?

Lots of info available through Google on issues with new production 5Y3s.

Hi I've been away from the forum so an update on my tweed tube rolling.

Still fine tuning my amp and trying to get a little more clean headroom (really an oxymoron for this type of amp) I put a vintage RCA 6072 in the V1 position. I already had a vintage 5751 in the V2 socket. The 6072 although expensive ($50) is a much better tube than the stock Russian 12AT7. Overall the tone more rounder less bright and immediate but more natural and best of all the remaining amp hiss disappeared so I knocked the noise floor down considerably.

I suppose some would argue that it may make the the amp less wooly and anti Tweed but I still believe there is a lot of tweed sound after 3 on the volume dial.

Anyone else out there has tried the 6072?

Think you mean stock 12ay7. The 6072 i think is just a low noise version of a 12ay7. Ive been running all old grass for a while and loving it 6072 in V1 . But I'm not really a clean head room kinda guy. I wana a get my hands on a nos 5751 and put it in v1 leave the 12ax7 in v2 . like i said I'm not a clean headroom kinda guy.

JAN 5751 are excellent in the Tweed. If you can afford them!

Correction: Yes sazafraz you are right the 6072 is a replacement for the 12AY7 in V1 position and is not a 12AT7 replacement as I said. My bad.

I agree with you the 6072 didn't create more headroom but only changed the tonal characteristics. Even with a 5071 in V2 which does create more headroom this amp is still really LOUD!

This is what one customer discovered when using a 5E3 circuit.

I presently have 5751 in v1 and a mullard 4042 (1950s)12at7 in v2. I also like 5751 in both.

The clarity of presentation is altered by the combinations of preamp tubes used but different ears heard different combos and still had the same opinion
The 12at7 allows(v2) the power control to really function as intended. no other v2 has come close to this.(5751 v1)All tubes are very old(5751 1980s,12at7 1950s and even the jan, phillips 12at7is 35 years old a mere child). You should try to find the 4042 mullard 12at7 as it works well with 12ay7 and 5751 but terrible with any era of 12ax7!

In general, this player prefers the JAN 5751 for his playing style.
