I've seen a bunch of threads around the net, spanning almost a decade, but still have not had any luck sourcing spray nitrocellulose lacquer in Canada. There's one seller on Amazon.ca offering Deft, but they want $25 shipping, so two cans would be, seriously, $60 after tax. Lee Valley doesn't seem to offer anything anymore, I picked up sparsely labelled Beauti-Tone spray lacquer from Home Hardware, turns out though according to their site though it's acrylic-based. I've read Watco and Deft are the brands, any tips?

ZINSSER shellac from many hardware stores (Home Hardware, home Depot etc.) is what we use. Cut 50% with alcohol or Methyl Hydrate.
Tint it with a wee bit of amber if you want, but not much.

That's what we do

I apologize for belaboring the issue, but to be clear, you don't use nitro or lacquer of any kind? Just a couple of coats of thinned down Zinsser shellac and voila?

Zinsser Shellac is really nice stuff. I love using it on my woodworking projects and if you thin it with alcohol like coco suggests it dries pretty fast too. It's also pretty forgiving stuff because later coats (again, when thinned with alcohol) kind of dissolve prior coats and they blend together, hiding most blemishes in your finish so it can be applied pretty fast.
