Hey guys
I talked to stephen about this months ago but we never solved it, and now im re-visiting my deluxe issue

I built this amp around February 2008 and had no problems. Sounded amazing (and quite loud, too!) and it went to the possession of a friend of mine.

A month or two passed where he was playing the amp regularly, and then one day while jamming with his band they took a break. He went back to the amp, switched it on and he was left with volume about 75% lower than what it should be.

I rarley get to crank amps in my apartment (I've built many 18 watters and some other clones like hiwatts and jtm45's) but this amp I can play at 12 and it sounds very, VERY sweet.. but has no power too it.

All of my voltages are in range (almost exactly what they were when it was first built) and i checked continuity of all jumpers and ground points in the amp.

I swapped the tubes with working ones i have in a tremolux I built and the same issues are happening (the only tube I havent changed is the 5Y3.. Im using a big 5U4GB in the tremolux.

The only thing I can possibly see it being at this point is the OT. Is it possible some damage could have been done to the OT causing it to still work, but cut volume by 75%?

I think tonight Im going to swap the OT with another I have.. I'm just hoping someone has any other ideas.

Thanks for any help!

Tried quite a few things thus far:

-Removed tone control and tried playing with no volume controls (jumpered wires instead).. no volume increase

-Tested plate and grid voltages with a meter with volume cranked... pops and crackles were no louder than the guitar signal... seems like its not a problem with the inputs now

-Removed trinity OT and replaced with a different brand 6k6 OT... didnt sound nearly as good, but no volume increase.

All of this has led me into a hole that I have no way to get out of.. so i decided to remove the board, re flow every connection and re-wire every tube socket connection from the board (with the OG output iron)

If anyone has any other ideas for reasons this is/was happening, can you help me out?

or any other testing ideas!

thanks...

rus

Boy, I'm at a loss as well. I dont think its board related. Check the resistance of all the res on the board tho. I expect them to be fine if the voltages are good tho.

Check the resistance of the grid resistors on the 6V6 too.

You didnt swap tubes around did you? - AY7 in AX7 position??

it wasnt the tubes, i replaced all of them quite a few times with no level difference

grid resistors are comming in around 1k5.. all in range.

This is one frustrating project though, ill tell ya.

Bad output tube socket? Could be the return of... Stephen's Ghost
Does it sound good, just quiet, hollow sounding and quiet? Running on one output tube maybe? Maybe the speaker itself? This is a tough one for such a relatively simple design!

Here's a shot in the dark.
I had a similar problem with a different amp (remember different :D )

Anyway I solved it by changing out the volume and tone pots.  Yes, I'm not kidding. When you have a "ghost" Never let any stone unturned :rol always wanted to say that   Sometimes the simplest thing is the solution :D :D
Good luck :D

Speaking of simple.

You have tried all the input jacks?
You have tried different cable?
You have tried different guitars?

Maybe plug jumpers or unsoldered 1/4" jacks into the 1-3 unused inputs while your plugged in to the fourth. Could be a short to ground or through a 1mΩ as well...
