I did 4 tests with various tubes. All tubes are new.

I used a '97 Les Paul Special with modern era p90 pickups I put in some years ago (it came with p100 stacked buckers).

The cab is a 1 year old Fender Bassbreaker 1X12 fitted with a 70w v-type Celestion. The speaker is stiff and over powered for the amp. It's got an annoying high end to my ears, but it's what I have on hand.

Mic set up is an SM57 hard right and 906 hard left.

The only FX is a very small touch of reverb or I can't even..

I didn't spend a lot of time on these and the level jumps around a bit, but no clipping. The guitar is almost in tune - it was in tune when I bought it. The playing is mostly terrible cause I did it myself. All one take. It's just to get the flavor between this selection of tubes.

Each test is 3 parts. Clean, dirty and full gain.

Clean is volume at 6-7 or so, and master at 11.

Dirty is volume 11 and master at 6-7 or so.

Full gain is in 'tude with volume at 11 and master 6-7.

Tone controls centred with no 'fat'.

Thanks for the references Les! That pair of EH tubes really has some dirt to them. I’ve always played my tramp with a JJ 12ax7 and 6V6 S. I have a EH, groove tube and vintage Rogers 12ax7 so I’ve been thinking about swapping those around. If I get the time maybe I’ll try and do what you did here so others can hear the results.
