Is there much difference tonewise, other than the Lightning having a way more versitile tone stack?

Thanks for any input,
Denny :D

from what I've read, i believe that the lightning can get a little bit dirtier than the spitfire. They're both bright amps obviously but the lightning can get a little bit deeper into 'edgier' territory

:)

steven, correct me if i'm wrong! :D

The Spitfire can get plenty dirty with its 1st trioide running hot and in parallel. the biggest difference is the MV. With the Lightning, you can coax the preamp into overdrive with the MV set low. The only way to get a Spit to act dirty is to crank her up! Of course, there is also that tone stack thing...

The easiest way to build a Marshless SpitPlexi is to build a WoodCross Thunderbolt 9. :arrow:

It's the most versatile "Spitfire" around.

That's pretty much my assessment as well. It's kind of like a Twin Reverb, but not as extreme. 8)

Actually, there is a Normal and Boost Switch on my amps that adds a bit of earlier breakup to em. The Amps retain their Voxy heritage but with SS Recto and a 1K Resistor in place of the Choke, it allows em to act a bit like a Plexi. The Marshall !8 Watt OT is a bit dirtier than the MAtchless/Vox trannies too.

That's cool, How does that work? and did you cathode bias the 6V6 hotter than normal?

Stephen;

No! The Thunderbolt 8 (2X6V6)already has a rail voltage of almost 400 VDC and the Thunderbolt 9 (2xEL84) runs at 348 VDC. It's an idea that Zophod Phil gave me at 18 Watt.com. Drop the value of Shared Cathode Resistor on the PI. I use parallel resistors and make it switchable.

Sounds like an interesting combo. Also, that's a cool idea about the normal/boost switch. I haven't been over to 18watt.com for a while, but a lot of cats seems to really love the 18 watt Marshall. 8)

Sounds like a worthwhile combination. That's a really good concept with the normal/boost switch, too. Although I haven't visited 18watt.com in a while, it appears that many cats genuinely adore the 18 watt Marshall.
