was wondering opinions on a lightning with diodes for rectifier?

Well, you'd have to cut the voltage quite a bit, post rectifier. With the 5AR4 it's already very high - 350V so you'd need to change the PS resistors to accommodate.

The Lightning has a lot of attack already, a SS recto may be a bit more that you want. Who know?

Easy enough to try it out before you do a tube recto version tho.

Macabee does it in some of his builds. Maybe he'll chime in here.

I have a schematic diagram by Gar Gilles {that I could send you} that shows how to wire in switchable diode rectification on a tube rec - he does it on the unused socket pins! Its a really good idea and doesnt mess up the aesthetics of the amp too much.

something to keep in mind if you do that:
it changes the B+
therefore it changes EL84s plate dissapation
you might need to find happy medium in the cathode resistor value
or bias it w/ the SS rectum fryers engaged and allow it to be biased a little cold w/ the 'AR4
unless you have a 3PDT switch to accomodate 2nd cathode bias resistor

i'm just sayin'
