Well, I'm still trying to tame my Lightning's tendency to be overly bright with a Strat. I have returned it to a completely stock circuit and played it that way for awhile and am now thinking about a cut control. I could wire one up on long leads and just let it dangle until I have had time to decide if I like it or not. If so, I could drill a hole and have a new plate made.

Has anyone tried this on a Lightning? How does it sound?

I haven't tried it but it sounds like a good idea. A simple passive circuit to tame an amp that is natrually bright.

BTW I am like my 50 watt Alnico Silver Bell in the Closed ported 1x12 with the Lightning more every time I hear it. That speaker really takes the edge off.

lbet, didn't the SOZOs bring tame this a bit the Lightning? and JohnH used a Sammi. Simple changes that might work.

That's right. I replaced the two .022 in the tone stack with the SoZo's.

..and what was the effoct on the tone? Maybe s2 would be interested in trying this out...it's a simple substitution as long as you can get the parts from SOZO! I wonder what effect the old mustard caps would have on this?

Why not just replace the master volume control with a Cut, to see how you like it?

The sozo's softend the hard edge that the amp can have. With the caps in the PI the amp was softend too much. Too creamy. (started to sound like my two rock believe it or not).

Excuse my ignorance , but what is sozo??

I did it to my spitfire and highly recommend it - it does roll off some presence that takes some edge off the brightness without affect your overall tone.
I think you saw my build at the 18 watt forum..

The sozo' s are reproductions, or clones of the mustard caps, and i recommend them in every cap position in your amp. but who am i? :o
hey S2, are you a believer yet?

re: cut control

I built one into my Lightning inspired amp from day 1 - took the idea from the DC30. It really does help take the edge off the distorted tones, esp with the Strat. I used a 1m audio pot and a 5.6n cap. The pot happened to have a switch so I wired it so the cut control is completely out of circuit with the switch off.

One of my other EL84 amps has a cut control and I find it equally useful with the Strat.

8) That really is the best way to find out as it only requires removing the two wires off the board from the master volume.

If it was done after and across the two output tube coupling caps then to try this out in an existing amp, all that would be required would be:

1. disconnect the 1M Audio MV wiper wire;
2. insert the 5.6n cap; and
3. reconnect.

You loose the MV for the test, but can still do the Cut Control test.

Sounds pretty straight forward.

The DC-30 uses a 250K Audio pot and 0.0022uF cap for the cut control.

I used 250kB pot and 0.0022uF as per DC30 specs and it worked a treat.

I did the same thing as DAZ with the dc30 specs using a 250k and .0022uf works great. I also added a fender bright switch to that 180pf cap. WOW this amp just jumped in front of my TMB head as my favorite amp.

What construction type and manufacturer of cap did you use for that 0.0022uF . Sounds like we're onto something here..

I simply used a blue coloured (?) cap from the local electronics store.
I was thinking of changing some orange drop caps in my spitfire to the sozo caps to further tame the brightness.
Where in the circuit do you guys recommend, I don't wanna make it too creamy, just take even a little more edge off.

BTW some pics of my build (just needs faceplates):

To answer your question i have used orange drop and mallory 150s, I prefer the orange drops in this amp. I just ordered some sozos today. after I get them I will give them a try and report my findings

Well, I've just been too busy to try this and honestly hate to open the amp up again. I think it has seen enough abuse. I'm just going to play it for a while and see if I still want to mod it in the future.
