So how does a Cut control differ from a Treble pot in effect? I'm being really lazy here, because I have an open chassis sitting in front of me with extra holes for pots. I'd just like to get some opinions before I try to get another wire into the eyelets.

A cut control is like a tone control for the whole amp instead of just the preamp. So, if you have a brightish preamp like a Matchless or a Vox, you can roll some of that off after the PI.

Yeah. The preamp's treble control is generally a highpass filter so you may end up with too much on top at times. The cut control is a lowpass filter which allows you to select the frequency at which to roll off the high end. I find the effect is more subtle than the treble control but very useful for taking the edge off a bright guitar & preamp.
