Hey Gang,

I’m about ready to start my lightning, since my compressor pedal project is wrapping up....and I'm going to build the head cabinet first...so I can dry mount the chassis.

does anyone have outlines on the dimensions for the lightning head cab?

I'm just looking for basic height, width, and depth....however, If someone's got something more specific...that's cool too!

You can look in the Lighting project links to get a 1X12 cab plan. I'll post the head cab dimensions as soon as I confirm them.

Anyone here have any info on lightning head cab heights?

I was hoping to get started on the cab today, it looks like I'm going to have to put this off some...

Any info is a great help! Thanks!

Hey guys, disregard....

I just started cutting wood and I've decided to veer slightly from the convention.

I don't really like the idea of a head that's 23.75 inches wide...so I'm going to reduce it's width a bit...

and cut the sides to be asthetically pleasing (assuming I leave enough clearance for tubes and removal of them...

Thanks anyway,
Frank

Well...

I'm done cutting. Cab is going to be 22.75W X 9.5H X 10.5D

That should be *plenty* of room. I've dry fit chassis holes for the top panel...and I should return to this sometime on the weekend....

Thanks stephen!

I've shortened the width down to 21.5 and height down to 8.5 as per your email.

The box is built and glue is drying...when I get back this afternoon, I'll sand and round over the edges. 1/2" bit right?

Also, does anyone know of a source of dogbone handles and those black partial cover corners that you guys use?

Penn is correct but they have minimum\ order sizes. Try Parts Express or I can piece some H/W together for you for a price.

Stephen and others...

I just built the head cabinet. I have to say guys, it looks to be out of proportion with itself...

for some strange reason 8.5H makes it look too flat...even though Matchless lists the exact dimensions listed above for all it's heads.

Do you guys think that Matchless used 1/2 inch wood in their head construction..so the inside dimensions look bigger?

Also, do you think the fact that the cab is so deep (at 10.5D) that it affects my perception?

Love to hear opinions...

Pretty sure they use 3/4". Heads are all over the place. The 18W are 9" sq. the Marshall 2203 is like 8" D X 10" H . I've built Lightnings heads 10.5 " sq.
My personal favorite is small box plexi size, but you'd never get a 15 chassis in there. Yeah, it might look a bit flat becasue it's so deep, but it looked OK to a lot of people when M@tchless did it.

Thanks Stephen....

I'm going with what I've got. I've got exactly 21.5WX8.5HX10.5D...

I've already completed cleat installation....dry fitting chassis holes, etc...

Tomorrow I cut down the rough with some sand paper...and out comes the router with the 1/2" roundover bit.

Should be tolexing by next week....and after that, out comes the soldering iron for the meat of the project!

Yeah....and I only work on the cab when the wife and kid are out of the house. If she caught me working on an amp head instead of the 30-40 item long list of house projects that need to get done.....she'd call the divorce lawyer.

Yesterday she was gone for about 90 minutes....day before 2-3 hours.

So I'm doing this with limited time windows. :)

Today, I'm going to have a window of about 1 hour and 15 minutes. I strongly suspect I'll only be able to rough sand...and I'll have to leave the round over routing for another day! :(

Well....rough sanding and round over's are done! :)

And they're still at Gymboree with 25 minutes to go. If I start the lawn now, it'll look like I've been mowing all morning! :)

Next chance I get, I'll get down to sanding out the lumps and bumps...filling the holes and tears with filler...

and tuesday, it's tolex time!
