Hi,

A couple of years ago I built a trinity tweed. The amp turned out beautifully and I loved the experience. Recently I've been wanting an amp with more headroom and an overdrive channel so I decided to have a crack at the OSD kit.

I'm moving through the build slowly. Today I started to install and wire the transformers.

When testing the power transformer everything seems to check out except for the Yellow wires (5V) which are reading approx. 80V each.

I'm not sure what to do!

The other voltages seem good:
Green wires to pilot light approx 3V each
Red wires 331 and 327
Red/Blue 45

Thanks!

Jim

You should see 5VAC across the two yellow wires. Don't measure from each yellow wire to ground. The 5 volt winding is not referenced to ground so it's free to float to whatever voltage it wants. This is normal. As long as you measure about 5 volts across the two yellow wires you are fine.

Thanks Mitch!

I get 5.5V when measured across the yellow wires.

So I have,
6.5V on the green wires at the pilot light
5.5V on the yellow wires
665V on the Red wires

looks like everything checks out.

I'm a little embarrassed to admit I didn't realize that across the wires meant a probe to each wire. I thought it meant each wire measured to ground then the two readings added together.

Yes, if there is a centre tap, you canference to ground. Now you know!

I’ve been moving very slowly though the kit. Here’s where I’ve ended up today. All done except for the heaters and the foot switch. So far so good (I think!). The only hiccup I ran into was that I found it difficult to complete the connections on the jazz/rock and mid boost toggle switches with components already mounted. I ended up stripping some off to get better access to the terminals then re connecting everything from the bottom up.

I’m having a blast but after months of working on it a few hours a week I’m looking forward to getting it going!

It's alive!

Just finished checking the amp over and going through the voltage checks ect.
Everything seems to be ok. The amp fired up right away and sounds fantastic! Even through the test cab I used which is very dark and mid range heavy.

What a great feeling!

With 6V6 power tubes,

Here are the voltages:

B+1 435
B+2 430
B+3 423
B+4 300
B+5 291

V1
Pin1, 197V
Pin3, 1.4V
Pin6, 195V
Pin8, 1.4V

V2
Pin1, 206V
Pin3, 1.4V
Pin6, 208V
Pin8, 1.36

V3
Pin1, 295V
Pin2, 36V
Pin3, 60V
Pin6, 297V
Pin7, 38V
Pin8, 60V

V4
Pin3, 432V
Pin4, 433V

V5
Pin3, 429V
Pin4, 434V

The AC main is 117V

One question I have is: There's a pretty loud static sound when I touch V3 pin 2 with the multimeter probe. Is that ok/normal?
Regardless, the amp is running quietly and sounds great.

Looks pretty good. Static when you touch the grids is normal.

I finally was able to build (with the help of a friend who knows how) a head cab for the osd. It’s not finished, no handle, feet, covering ect. But I wanted to try it out on a gig so I took it out last night. It worked beautifully! The cab has a tone tubby red in it which I picked up used. Based on what I’ve read it seems people prefer ceramic speakers in this kind of amp but the red is a good fit for me. The amp sounds fantastic.
I like the look of the wood so I’m considering varnishing the head rather than tolexing it.
The front panel is a bit short so I think I’ll cut another and screw it on from the back so there are no screws on the front. I’m guessing that’s how it’s supposed to be installed anyhow.
Here’s a shot of it so far.
