We've decided to use a progressive switch for the power on the TRIWATT and probably some of the other amps (TC-15, Tweedle). I finally found a quality Carling switch that is designed the way we need it.

The power & standby switches will be replaced by one three position switch. In it's lowest position, the amp will be OFF. The next position will be STANDBY and then finally ON.

This will give us more panel space and simplify the design and look. I saw this on on of Brent's Orange amps and he liked the idea as well.

Any thoughts or comments on this?

i dig it.
Actually always thought the idea of a switch like this was more practical. Clean.

I use the standby on amps to warm up, and also just for good measure for a bit, when i'm powering down.
i figure it can't hurt, right ??

good idea. When I had my Rocker 30 (had, when I got my Trinity amps I sold it off due to lack of use) it has the 3 way as well.

many times, I think I am throwing the standby switch on, when I am really turning the amp off... a three way will make that harder to do IMO.

I second (or third) the motion. Simpler, neater, more space, and I too have turned off the power toggle thinking it was the standby. Even if the three positions are not labelled, it would be a quick learn - middle is always standby/on, and light on with the power would make it easy to know what the two "ends" of toggle travel are - totally off and on/no standby. Right?

I like the idea but don't think I would want one.

Just a personal taste. More switches/knobs is better mentality probably.

Yes... this is why I LOVE the idea of this switch. :D

Would you now loose the ability to discharge the caps with the power switch off/standby switch off combination? What would the state of the switch be in the full "off" position? Power is off obviously, but what state is "standby" when the amp is off? Does this question make sense? :hmmm:

Yes you loose that capability, but in the TRIWATT, at least, there are 220K cap draining resistors all over the place.

I'd add them to the TC-15 as well.

Yeah - I think it's a good idea too, especially in cramped quarters.

I'd like to use something like that with some of my projects too actually. It would be ideal for my modded Valve Junior in fact.

IMO the best way to discharge caps quickly and safely is to switch the amp OFF and play some power chords, which you can hear gradually fizz away. I always love hearing that happen. :) So this arrangement would indeed allow you to do that. Apart from that, like Stephen says, we also have 220k discharge resistors in the amp.

Progressive Switches are in!!

Carling quality, lots of current capacity too.

Is it just a DPST (on-off-none)?

Two poles to make or break the mains. Two poles to make or break B+ and then the off position where both connections are open.

??

This is definitely not your common, everyday, 2 pole switch. This circuit is OFF-ON-ON

So...
Position 1: both circuits open
Position 2: circuit 1 on (AC to amp), circuit 2 still open (B+)
Position 3: both circuits on
⫽ Yes
⫽ No

So B+ caps will be left charged and disconnected from the circuit upon shut off, no power chord to discharge the power supply caps?
This is sort of what I was asking above.

So is it two SPST switches with no common lug to either SPST?

X Yes

It does mean you cant turn the power off & drain with the Standby On so adding bleeder resistors is a reasonable thing to do. We used 220K 2W in the TRIWATT to do this from the supply caps.

I think that's a typo. Actually 220k 2W.
