What are you guys using for a single 12" cab for a speaker?

How about good tubes that aren't a fortune? I'll use some cheapos for fire up and trouble shooting, but for actual use I don't mind springing for something nice.... Not quite $190 per EL84, but I'm pretty new to this. I'm sure there's something more rerasonable.

I have had good luck with JJs and Russian EL84M . Have used EH but not quite as good. Chinese Shuguang 12AX7 are good as well. All are less than $10 per tube and will provide good performance. There was a good thread on new 12AX tubes in this forum. see viewtopic.php?t=509

For speakers, we always recommend Tone Tubbys. The Ceramic hempcone is a good bet.

My current faves in new production are the JJ and Ei EL84s. Both are very nice tubes. For test tubes I use a bunch of old Sovteks, because I don't want to put them in my amps! If I was buying new ones, it would definitely be Chinese 12ax7s. They are inexpensive and sound great!

How do the Ei EL84 stand up? How would you characterize the sound?
I use the Russian EL84M version and they are reliable & meaty sounding.

Ei AX7s are too microphonic for my tastes so I have stayed away from Ei.

+1,

I don't even match em. I just slam em in there...and if there's no excess noise, I roll all the knobs east and go to town!

Those russian el84ms kick booty. I've watched name brand el84s wiggle away and die at far less abuse than I've dished these mil-tubes.

Thanks for the suggestion coco....

I use Russian NOS EL84's, hunt around and you can pick the up very cheaply. I bought 10 at $5AUS each inclusive of shipping and out of that batch matched 3 pairs and 1 quartet, all tubes being 100% good.

Thanks, guys. Have a speaker en route, an Eminence Private Jack, off of e-bay. Tubes also on way. Still waiting on package from Toronto...
