Okay -

Good news:

1. No explosions or burnt smell. I DID smell something at first, but realized it was just the tubes heating up the dust on the outside.
2. No PT or OT failure.
3. No red plating in the power tubes
4. No tube failure
5. No fuse blown
6. Got sound out of Channel 2. It works!

Bad news:

1. No sound whatsoever out of Channel 1, except I can hear the amp power up when switching the Standy switch to "Operational".
2. Channel 2 sounds kind of "pinched" and stangled.
3. When the Master Volume is engaged, it doesn't sound too different from when bypassed.
4. Pursuant to #3, when the MV is engaged and turned all the way DOWN, I still get signal coming through, about the volume level of talking.
5. Position #3 on my tone selector doesn't pass signal.
6. When I turn up the Cut control it suddenly gets really loud!
7. Jewel light doesn't light up.

Suggestions and voltage readings would be appreciated.

Thanks,

VJ

P.S. Rather than risk powering up with my very expensive GZ34 Mullard NOS, intial powerup was performed with a WZ34 Copper Cap. At least I know that the amp basically works even with the slightly additional voltage.

I learned a lot by trouble-shooting my build  Can you post some pics of the wiring?

Congrats!
Firstly give us some wiring pics and voltages, it will help alot more.
triple check your wiring - often these things occur as wiring errors.
For channel 1, check your voltages on v1. Tell us what you get.

Check for missing solder joint at grounds so check them all out with an ohmmeter.
Make sure they are soldered - they might look like it but check again!

OK kids -

Here's the update:

1. I'd accidentally wired a couple of things wrong, causing the strangled sound and "runaway" gain on the cut control. This has been fixed, I think - Channel 2 now sounds pretty good. This fix also eliminated the tone position 3 problem for whatever reason.

2. I STILL get signal from Channel 2, with the MV engaged and gain control above 5 or so. Approximately as loud as conversation. From what I understand, the C-30 should be totally attenuated when turned all the way down.

3. I thought I had wired the jewel light backwards. Swapped the heater wires - still no dice. What's the best method for measuring heater voltages??

4. Voltages from V1 to follow.

5. This is a LOUD amp. :D

I can post photos of Channel 1 if you guys really want, but it's the GF's camera and she's kinda protective.

MV applies to both channels assuming it's engaged. If it's all the way down, you should get nothing out.

Is the jewel light neon or one with with a bulb. Measure across the two terminals, should have 120 VAC for the neon one or 6.3VAC.

Getting 6.38v on the jewel light. I actually think it's a dead lamp.

Agreed, replace with #47 bulb
