Hey guys -

I THINK I am almost done with my Ceri@tone HC-30 clone, but have started to look at the shielded wires and become a bit confused. I don't have anymore shielded wire, so I don't want to screw this up.

The shielded wire is grey with two sleeved wires in the center, an unsleeved gauge wire type conductor, and then a bunch of foil surrounded by grey sleeve.

According to the layout and pics, there are two runs of this wire going from A, D, F, G connections. In my case, I decided to gang the A & G connections for one length and D & F for the other length.

Here's the rub: What do I do with this goddamn gauge wire in the middle? Also, the foil? Where the hell does that attach? Nearest available ground? At one end or both ends?

Help coco or Daz!

thanks,

VJ

P.S. This is all according to the latest Ceri@tone layout sheet, freely available at the website and, I assume, already in everyone's hot little hands already.
:D

The unslevved wire in the middle is the ground and by virtue of it being wrapped around the foil, it becomes the shield connector. Connect that at the ground at the input jack end. Connect the other two sleeved wires one to each cahnnel.

Personally, I prefer the braided coax RG174. Its' a bit more difficult to prepare but is very flexible and does a nice job so thats what we use. Yours will work fine.

This actually has nothing to do with the input jacks - it's the shielded wire that goes between the two effects loops and the board/volume pot.

How exactly do you recommend that I prep the wire - strip away the foil and solder the unsleeved wire to the volume pot ground? twist the foil around the unsleeved wire, then solder?

Thanks,

VJ

Ahh, not being familiar with the Ceri@tone kit ... I'd say, lay bare the unsleeved wire and just attach it to the ground point [wherever that is]. The foil & wire should be electrically connected inside because they are wrapped mechanically together.

Can you give the play-by-play on how to prep that cable that you prefer for shielded applications.

the Ceri@tone shielded cable is a little fragile - I'm looking for coaxial strength with a bit more girth to all three conductions as well.

Thanks,

Jer

Cut back the outside plastic covering at both ends by about 5/8" to reveal the braided shield.

At on end, pull back the shield and cut it off at the 5/8" mark. Put some heat shrink around the end covering the area where it was cut off.

At the other end, pull back the shield but poke a very fine screwdriver or pick into the shield and work out a 'hole' . Fish the inside conductor through this hole and pull it through.

Twist the braid together.

Finally, cut back the outside plastic covering on the inside conductor at both ends by about 1/4"

Good pic here of the cables:

Could I use a section of an XLR cable to do the job??

Thanks,

Jer

It might be pretty thick. You might do better with audio cables or microphone cable. I use RG174 coax.

Whew! That coaxial shielded wire is kind of a nightmare to work with.

I ended up using a few sections from an unused microphone cable. I'm very pleased with the results - the included shielded cable from Ceri@tone was rather flimsy with really bad foiling, the mic cable was equipped with two 16 gauge leads and a full copper braid for shielding. A bitch to work with but results were outstanding.

Anything else before I hook it up to a speaker and fire it up??

Tubes:
NOS Mullard 12ax7 and Bogner chinese 12ax7 - Ch1 Preamp V1 & V2
NOS Mullard EF86 and Bogner chinese - Ch2 Preamp V3 & V4
Power tubes - all #5 rated EL84's from Groove Tubes
Rectifier - NOS Mullard GZ34 in original box

Thanks,

Jer
