A shiny new sIII for Lawrence! Reused some SOZO caps, otherwise stock.

Thanks for posting the link Steve. My ears are still ringing from the tube swaping / testing / hi volume day time picking. I finally settled on a Phillips labeled Mullard for V1, a EI smooth plate in V2 (tempting the gods of microphonics there for sure) and a Telefunken smooth plate in V3 (the PI).

Anyway, I got the french language project started today and after I was done I recorded a lower volume clip with the nude sIII. I used a Tokai SG60 loaded with wcr crossroads pickups. The channels were jumpered. The cab used was a open back 2x12 with one tone tubby papercone and one cannabis rex.

One of the main things I like about the sIII is that it cleans up very nicely when you roll back the volume. I included a bit of blues noodling at the end of the track that shows this trait nicely. It's like a baby trainwreck in that way.

P.S. No FX on the guitars either. I had to hold myself back. A little reverb with pre delay and some chorus and a little bit of detune on the lead would have been nice.

Nice clip. Lots of beautiful harmonics in there. As I was listening, I was wondering how you got some of them. But I think you answered it "The channels were jumpered". :D

Any idea what the control settings were for the main part of the clip?

I am continuing to hammer my sIII. It is still a chasis sitting on particle board. I this pair of clips have exactly the same settings on the amp and use different guitars. I am going into a 2x12 cab with a pair of tone tubbies. I am surprised how close the neck pickup of the Les Paul sounds for the smokey clip.

The strat shows that tubbies can still jangle. I like the feeling of the lower registers. You can hear the string do it's thing.

The 2x12 now has one alnico and one ceramic hemp cone. A little smoother and brighter than just the alnicos alone. Great bass response. It is a little more general purpose than the alnicos.

Here is a clip of what TT calls "The Bomb". It is the Ceramic Alnico Hemp cone mix in an Avatar vertical 2x12 cab. I single mic'ed it with an Apex 430 condenser placed about 4 feet from the cab. I bridged the channels on the amp and had them set for equal volume with the normal channel tone on 3 and the TMB channel set a B6, M8, T5 and both volumes were on about 8 or 9.

The cool part about the sIII is that it cleans up very well when you turn down the volume on the guitar. This is evidenced in the clip below. I was playing a Historic '59 335. Heavy guitar with a chunky neck and soon to be upgraded '57 classic pickups. There is a lot of fur when I crank the guitar....maybe I should have gone into the low input? But it cleans up so nicely when I roll the controls back that I just left it.

Anyway, just thought I'd share my setup on this one.

Just set up my amp in the same way and I could hear the tone with some slight differences due to the 2 X 10" Sammis I guess :-) that and the fact I was playing a stock LP Classic.

Cool. I also added some "secret sauce" at Coco's direction. It is a boost switch that I added to the stock sIII that is on during the clip. It brightens things up a bit as well as adding some fur and compression.

Now that's a red rag to a bull if ever there was one ;-) Come on Stephen, pass the sauce.

Here's the secret recipe for the sauce:

Take a 1 uF electrolytic cap;
Place across the 2.7K on V2;
Turn on, play, listen.

For icing, try combinations of different caps to get 1 uf in total
- mylar, poly, mica, orange drops etc.
Turn on, play, listen, repeat.

Note: values greater than 1 uf not recommended.

When fully simmered to taste, add toggle switch to chassis.
- or try a foot switch with shielded wire.

I messed around with different types of caps until I got a sound and feel that I could live with. (I am cork sniffing caps now...can you believe it!?)

Anyway each type sounded differnt and the difference was not too subtle sometimes.

Electorlytic - The polarized caps seemed to offer a more compressed and distorted tone. There was buzzyness but in a good way kinda like greenbacks. This trait worked ok in conbination with other caps with different sounds.

Mylar - I put a big ass 1uf mylar cap in there and the sound was cleaner and punchier than the electrolytic.

Polyester - At least I think it was. It came out of a guitar, looks like a chicklet and has a rainbow of colours around it. .47uf I think. Sounds like mylar but not so bold and uncompressed.

Tantalum - Almost identical to Electrolytic in tone.

In the end I went for two .5uf caps in parallel. One mylar and one rainbow chicklet. It gave me an overlay of sounds that my ear liked. (I do need more caps for continued testing though).

BTW, at Coco's suggestion I added a mini toggle switch that lets me manually switch the boost caps in and out. There is a little tiny hole in the chassis that's predrilled for such a swtich. I just had to drill out the plastic back panel.

OK are we now suggesting a 22uf and 2K7 combination over this earlier mod?
Nigel

P.S. Why do quotes not work any more Stephen?

22uF takes you into a very broad range frequency boost. 1uf accentuated the highs more. It's really a matter of taste. Currently using 22uf but that can change!

"Dont know why the quotes stopped working" and only if the name is included i.e. [quote] works [quote=coco] doesn't.

Not this one, that would be covered under the post "Coco's sIII V6"

Clips coming soon on that one.

Ibet mentioned something about an extra hole in the chassis? I think I like this boost idea..can the parts be included in the kits?

Yes, the parts can be included for a boost switch. Mention it when you order & it will be taken care of.
