Usually I see wire wound resistors that are encased in a ceramic material but I've also seen other wire wound resistors that are through hole and shaped like a regular resistor. The specs for both types are the same as far as wattage, resistance and voltage so would I be wrong in assuming that they are interchangeable? In particular, a company called Ohmite makes these wire wound resistors and they are less bulky than the regular ceramic block type you see. Would it make a difference which one I used in the bias circuit or is there a specific reason the ceramic type are usually used? I'm assuming that cost is probably the main reason as the only difference I found was the tolerances. The ceramic type have a higher tolerance (5 to 20%) where the tubular type are only 1%. Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Both types should be OK in a bias circuit. The rectangular cement ones might be better at dissipating heat, but as long as the round ones don't get overly hot and they aren't touching anything else they should be fine.

1% power resistors are more expensive, though.

Thanks. The 1% are more expensive, about twice as much as the ceramic. Not really an issue when you're building an amp for yourself I don't think. Different if you're running a production line and building hundreds and hundreds.

Cheers!

Yes, no problem using them. No need to really though.
