Well I think it's Take-4!! Yup, 4 ...

Tomorrow will be a big day. The latest incarnation of the Custom Triwatt Lead will be unveiled in bgroup's studio. Several players [3 AFAIK] are lined up to try it out. It has the new PT and OT and has been tested in the shop. zaphod went over it pretty closely. Voltages are all good and high, so with a little luck, this will be the final test and then bgroup can lay down some serious clippage! And we can move on to getting the rest of the parts ordered and shipping can begin.

Pictures and comments to come. Standy by and set this post to "Notify me when a reply is posted" 8)

Now we've just got to find a way of getting the guitarists to stop having fun with the amp, so they sit down and do at least a few good clips that blueprint the amp's main tones. :)

And I'm also pissed as hell that I won't be able to be there this time! :x :(

OK all you crazy Triwatt fans, here we go!! We had fun today! It was Stephen, me, and Rob Waite, a pile o'geetars, a bunch of cabs, and THE Triwatt... THE Triwatt as in "done"... this is it... finished... The one.

VERSATILE with a capital V! This amp does EVERYTHING. Seriously. EVERYTHING. We had jazzy fat cleans, and spanky, prickly cleans... the mid-gain realm runs the gamut and this is good since I suspect most of us will live here most of the time... and then the higher gain... yes, there's lots of gain... ;)

OK, so where does the Triwatt fit in? It does the Hiwatt thing, very well I might add, but this is only the half of it. It goes way beyond what I can do with my DR103 - there are SO many more shades of mid and high gain here that just wouldn't happen with my DR, not even with pedals... So, think of the Triwatt as not only a Hiwatt "clone", but a Hiwatt+++++++++ :) It certainly isn't a Fender, but with a little tweaking you can get Fender-esque cleans... And it's a lot tougher sounding than a Marshall, but with the Overdrive stage engaged it's possible to get Marshall-esque tones...

We came full circle with the PI tube. With the original temporary transformers, the amp wasn't tough enough so we swapped out the 12AT7 for a 12AX7 which toughened it up a bit. With the new final rev transformers, the 12AX7 certainly still works, but lowers the clean headroom a bit, and gives everything a "crunchier" sound - you'll be able to hear this in some of the clips. Today we swapped back in the 12AT7 and it gave the Triwatt more clean headroom, a little more fatness/roundness, and even a bit of "sag". I preferred it this way. I think Rob did too (he can chime in here). Guys like Phil that feel "clean is a waste of a good tube amp" might prefer the 12AX7. We also tried the 5751 - this didn't do it at all. Seemed to almost completely remove the clean headroom for some reason. Anyway, for those familiar with Stephen's 18W, I would liken the AT7 to his sIII, and the AX7 to his Plexi FWIW...

I alluded to this before but the Master Volume is really a part of the tone shaping - it doesn't merely turn the volume down, it increases clean headroom and impacts the tone. And as far as I'm concerned the last word on the VRM for this thing is YOU DON'T NEED IT! We set out to get a HUGE tone with the MV down around 8:30 or 9:00 - I think we succeeded. It's clip number 22, listen for yourself... BIG tone, MV way down. 8) :D

What else... hmmm... well it's a desert island amp. I could make an entire record with just this amp and be very happy.

So, that's all I can think of for now. If you have questions, ask. I'm uploading the clips for Stephen tonight and he has the photos of the panel settings to go along with the clips. As you can see, pretty radically different settings yield widely usable tones on the Triwatt. More clips to come - I've got this thing for a week so I'm going to try to get some more players in here to give it a whirl. For the next round I'm thinking I'm going to concentrate on dark, moody tones... :)

From this round, I think all the tones are pretty cool, but my favourite recorded tones are in clips 01, 04, 05, 10, 12, 13, 15, 18 ( 2nd half Greenbacks), 19, and 21 might be my favourite of the day! :) And 22 the low MV one is right up there too!! 8)

One final thing... if my Triwatt sounds exactly like this prototype, I'll be VERY happy. :) :) :)

Note from coco: If your computer speakers are crappy little ones like his, he suggests you plug into your headphones to sample these!! Or better yet, make a CD and listen in your car or stereo.

Today, we stuck with the JJ 6V6. We're just getting used to these and finding out how they sound and react and break up. The KT66, when they go in - and they will go in - will be a whloe new ball of wax.

6V6's... I haven't heard it with KT66's yet... I'm curious, but it's so good as it is...

Thanks jcny!! :) It definitely can be a pretty ambient space, but it's certainly not out of control at all... It just sounds big in here. Drums are a thing of absolute beauty. :) And percussion!! The room sound on a tambourine track sounds crazy! Acoustic guitars are beautiful, and if you mic a clean spanky guitar tone from back a bit you can get a nice slap. On vocals, I need very little artificial reverb... 8)

The clips have left my building so it's in Stephen's hands now!!!! :)

Thanks to Brent & Rob for all their studio work today. It took over 4 hours to get this set of clips!

My pleasure - I love every minute I spend with the Triwatt, and fall in love with it even more as I get to know it's sweet spots. :)

BTW, clip 21 is "Brent's magic settings" that we referred to in earlier threads... wasn't even aware of that when I announced it was my favourite in the post above!! :o

And WOW! Was just driving home after a long day at the studio (after Stephen and Rob left I had a session!) and was listening to the clips on CD... man, does the Triwatt ever have "a sound"! If you listen to the first 10 seconds or so of each track and flip through you can really identify the Triwatt thing - it's very cool. Of course this doesn't diminish it's versatility, it's just that it's got a consistent sonic signature... and I love it!!!! :)

Meant to mention also that I'm totally digging the "Nirvana" tone on the second half of clip 2... that's the "tough" Hiwatt thing in all it's glory!! :)

Working on players for more rounds of clips... :)

Love to hear more of a Pete Townsend type sound.

Well, I know what I'll be doing this evening. That's a very wide range of tones.

Brent, #21 is my favorite too after a quick spin through these - using my crappy earbuds. We'll see what the verdict is when I get this stuff pumping through my real gear later tonight.
